Just got done playing through The World Ends With You after putting it off for months because I couldn't get use to the fighting system at first and dismissed it as something I would never get in to. Thankfully, I forced myself to give it another shot and ended up getting into more than any other game on the DS next to Elite Beat Agents.
Firstly, everything about the game is unique. The fighting system that I could barely stand when I first started playing actually turned out to be a lot of fun after that initial steep learning curve. In addition to that, the item/pin collection is entertaining to build and master as the game goes on. Next, the story and characters were impressively constructed and have the most realistic traits and dialog of any game I've ever played on any system. The one thing I didn't really get into but is still a lot of fun is the mini-game system called Tin Pin Slammer, which like most mini-games in Square's releases adds much to the playability and fun factor of TWEWY. The customization factor is great as well, you can change the difficulty level of the enemies AND players on-the-fly to gain more EXP and better pins, which is great once you get the fighting system down and can take on noise (enemies) more confidently. Finally, the graphics and music are as beautiful as they are distinctive and add a lot to the realism of the game, more so then any game I can think of. But above all, you have to give a lot of credit to Square for focusing so much on the characters and story more than anything in this one. The Matrix-esque setting and story is so different from the usual "save the world" scenario and the characters are incredibly relatable and not even close to the same old benevolent party of do-gooders. There so much more to say about this game but at this point I'm begging for TL;DRs so I'll stop there.
In all, this is probably the greatest game on the DS to date, and I'm being as unbiased as I possibly can after playing 100+ titles so far. It's not going to be for everyone, and like me many will be eager to throw it away after those first few battles, but just know that it's not some cookie-cutter RPG from Square and you don't have to be into Final Fantasy games to enjoy it, in fact this might be a surprising breath of fresh air for those with a disdain for FF titles. I know I'm late to the game here and hopefully I'm already preaching to the choir about it to most of you, but I feel the game really deserves to be brought to the attention of as many DS owners as possible. So, if you have a DS and want to get into something that will demand your attention for a couple of weeks or so.. this is it.
