Trap and release is probably a good idea, though a squirrel in cage can equal one crazy-ass beast. You might also just learn to live with them. A squngee (www.squngee.com) might help.

Squngee? I watched the video...haha it could be pretty amusing, although I don't know what the point of it is.

Tony, thanks for the info.

No problem.

LOL @ the Squngee. I've seen those before - the folks who sell them are local. You're definitely not going to get rid of any with it, but you'll at least get some laughs out of it, and be sure they'll work for their food

You can fire pellet guns on your own property in most places, just be aware that like firearms they shoot a projectile at a high rate of speed (some of teh high-end models approach firearm speeds), so be careful where you point the thing.
Leave the corpse where it falls... you want to send a message to his family and friends.

Heh I think I'm going to have to get a couple of those for the squirrels in our yard. It will drive the cats watching out the windows in our house nuts.

I'm so terrible - I just can't stop laughing at that one squirrel's release. It's like something out of The Simpsons. I think Homer or Lisa released some fish or something into the wild, "You're free!" Then a shark immediately ate it.

"I'm out! I'm out! Trees everywhere! OOOOHHH!!!! A big white fast thing! That looks like fun! I'll go meet---THWACK"

I'm already thinking up a variation on the Squngee. Perhaps a Squirri-pault? Fire the little bastards into your neighbors yard, hehehe.

If you had asians living in the neighborhood you wouldn't have to worry about squirrels.

I love the paintball idea. You'd either have rainbow colored squirrels running around or colorful corpses, depending on the gun and what area of their body you choose to 'paint'.

There's a video of that floating on the web too. Metal bowl + squirrel bait attached to giant slingshot. They launched the squirrel out of sight of the camera!

I used to trap them and release them several miles away. It didnt seem to help. More just kept coming.
Then I went to Walmart and bought a $30.00 pump pellet gun with a $8.00 scope. Works like a charm. Lots of fun shooting this little guys too.
I did this in town in a neighborhood so don't be a whimp and worry about someone coming to get you for shooting in town. Just do it.

My dog takes care of them for me. On those days, we don't have to feed her either.

I'll try the traps first.

Shooting them does sound like fun though

Cruel, but fun.

A decent pellet gun (the multiple pump variety) with pellets (not BB's) is absolute murder on squirrels. There's nothing cruel about it it's every bit as effective as a .22. Takes the back of their heads right off.

Cheap, quiet, & effective.

What more can you ask for?

Wow really? Even a pellet gun could kill a squirrel? Maybe I'm just underestimating the power of a real pellet gun...I only know this cheap airsoft pistol I have.

Right you are!

Even though it's been done, I'm still tempted to build my own implementation, heehee...

They are difficult to get rid of. Kill or transport these and others will just take their place. My suggestion: try to stop feeding them. Get rid of the bird feeders and the garden plants they like. Without food, after you transport them away, maybe no more will come back.

I guess that's most logical. I love the birds, but you win some, you lose some.

For a season (all of this past fall+winter) we didn't put anything in the bird feeders and the squirrils hung around, so I don't know how effective that's going to be.

You could get a squirrel-proof bird feeder like this one.

A dog will happily work around the clock to keep any wildlife out of your yard.
