I am ready to install the OS in a newly built PC. I want to install that in a partition in a Hitachi DeskStar 2TB mechanical drive. My secondary drive is a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD which I will dedicate to FSX. My question is: Do I still have to enable AHCI in the BIOS?

I would install the OS on to the SSD, enable AHCI and use the HDD for storage personally.

If you're building a flight simulator from the looks of it, you would probably still have plenty of room on the SSD to put that on there also I would think, 500Gb is a pretty large SSD.

You are the first person to suggest that. What are the cons of doing this? Is 500GB enough room? I know that I have always been told to keep Windows on a drive to itself.

I had not thought of that which shows how little I know about it. First, I am sure that you are suggesting partitioning the SSD. Which prompts my question about when do i run the instillation disk included with the drive? Also, is 100GB enough for Windows? I have never had to do it, and it has been a long time since I have intslled Windows, but I understand that I am given the option of partitoning along the first of the installation procedure.

Not really, I suggested that right above him.

You do not need to partition the SSD.

100 Gb should be more than enough, I think is usually 70-80, I forget offhand the wife uses mines these days.

I use 8.1 atm.

Keep the SSD as one partition (Windows will add it's own small partitions at the installation process). When you install, disconnect the mechanical disk and after you finish the installation reattach it.

thanks for the good info guys. My only apprehension on installing Windows and FSX on the SSD is that if it goes out then I have lost quite a bit. Ill have to think on that. Thanks again

How is that any different than if your mechanical HD goes out? Just back up your data. You can always re-install the OS and programs.
