I have to ask, what are you using your computer for that you felt an ssd would be the proper upgrade for something like that (also are you running an x2 or single core)? While I am very happy with my G2, and I think it may actualy have been a bigger performance increase for most day to day use (not actual work but standard use) then going from my q6600 at 3.6 to my i7 at 4.2 (much bigger for programing work/gaming/encoding), I am not sure the same could be said compared to going from single to dual or dual to quad.

SSD's are a qaulity upgrade, and will definitely improve your desktop experience but depending on your use there are probably other parts worth swapping first (cpu/gpu/memory...)

who are you asking? if me, then look at my signature for current system. I was using a WD caviar blue 640GB two platter drive before

It's clear to anyone that's been here awhile and read your posts that an Intel drive was your choice from reading reviews

Oh I see now, the tests in those reviews are only good when you read or use them but my observations from the same tests are inaccurate.

I suppose when I get my God badge I'll be able to make the rules up as I go along too.

take a chill pill already. if it is the exact same test, and you look at the same aspects of it, then it is accurate.

Okay, so cliffs: do I need AHCI with my Super Talent SSD? Things are kind of going downhill with it, so I am curious because I have it in IDE mode running Win7.

need? no... but it should improve performance... it should also be a PITA to change your mode from IDE to AHCI if you installed windows in IDE mode

What's the deal with AHCI? First time I've ever heard of this thing. Since I'm getting a G2 soon, figure I should know. Where do you enable the AHCI option? I don't remember seeing this before. I suppose it is in the bios? And can I have just the SSD in AHCI mode or do all my drives need to be?

Okay, I should probably reinstall then. I followed some un-substantiated advice on Hardforum and switched from IDE to AHCI without re-installing windows. I don't know what that does but it's not been as smooth sailing since then. Any thoughts?

I saw your thread over there and don't know who's directions you followed but what did you do?

IIRC, you have a Vista install?

Dorkenstein, you mean it actually booted in AHCI? it should blue screen on you. Intel recommends you install in RAID mode, that makes windows install the drivers for both RAID and AHCI... then you can switch to what you WANT To run. the advantage is that you can freely adjust your settings later...

Baboonguy, AHCI is advanced host controller interface, it allows new drive features like hotplug, NCQ, TRIM, etc...
NCQ allows faster multi tasking performance, although in most drives at the cost of single thread performance. This really depends on the quality of your firmware, but the firmware in the intel SSD is top notch, and the indilinx isn't too shabby either

Ouch. Well, no, it didn't blue screen but some of my icons got messed up. Should I reinstall anyway, since some things are most likely corrupted? I wouldn't be losing much. Also, should I stick with IDE mode if I am the only user? Thanks.

this is odd, the only way it would boot is if you have the right driver, but you shouldn't unless you had it on...
there is no corruption involved, you either have or don't have the driver, and you can manually install it without reinstalling windows.
if you aren't getting a blue screen on boot then you are most likely fine and don't need a reinstall.

I have since switched bad to IDE, as my windows index score for my ssd went down .1 of a point from 7.1 to 7.0.
