SSD to SSD Cloning Question

Hi,

My current desktop was installed two years ago and I have 80GB Intel SSD. Due to space issue, I just purchased a bigger 180GB (Intel 520 SSD). Following are my questions.

1. Can I clone from current SSD to new SSD ? (Without copying Win 7 64 Bit)
2. What cloning software to use ?
3. Do I need to re-align new SSD ?
4. Is there any step-by-step instruction.

You advice will be really appreciated..

A clone is a mirror image... everything including the OS comes with it. If you are updating to a new OS, I would install the new OS and just transfer your files.

I used Acronis '12 for my last two transfers, it worked very well.

A product like Acronis should handle any realignment issues.

Follow the instructions for whatever software you use. BACK UP your files before you try to clone!

Agreed, except I use 2010, but it has worked well for me. Back up to an external drive, swap SSD's, copy the image from the external onto the new one. Alignment and etc. is take care of automatically (I have checked afterwards to be sure).

Along those lines, copy your O/S to your new drive using whatever backup program you currently have installed. You do currently have a backup program of some sort installed, right?

If not, Acronis does come at a price, but it's a fairly small one, and it's great for backing up your O/S on occasion which is something everyone should do anyways.

I use EaseUS To Do Backup (free) and have just cloned a 128 GB SSD from a 64GB SSD and all went well. I just had to expand the new 128GB SSD.

I got a Samsung 256 GB 840 Pro which came with its own cloning software; couldn't have been easier to swap my 128 GB C300 for it. Otherwise, I suppose any modern cloning software would do.

Acronis automatically adjusts the new partition if the new drive is larger than the source.

I use Acronis all the time to blow images onto work machines. I highly recommend it.

Macrium Reflect (free) has worked super for several HD to SSD and also SSD to SSD transfers. As for aligning, I formatted them all in Windows 7 prior to imaging so not sure (think so but not sure).
