SSI CEB question.

I didn't know if this goes in the Motherboard or the Case section.

I plan on getting a Asus P9X79-E WS to build a photo/video editing rig. I'm wanting a full size tower(750D) so that I can expand later on down the road when I add a Quadro cards and other stuff. The problem is that most case don't support the SSI CEB format. If a case supports E-ATX and XL-ATX will it fit this board. Some people says yes while others say no. I figure that if the case can fit two larger boards then why not a smaller one?

this board is 1" wider and mounts to the tray with the standard atx pattern. it appears to me that the corsair obsisian 750d has more than enough space.

That's what I figured. I didn't see why the 750D couldn't hold it. I will order the case and try it out, might just have to send it back if it doesn't.

Thank you for the replies.

Just a warning- I've got the 750d and tried putting a ssi-eeb motherboard in it (which it officially doesn't support despite being the same as E-ATX). It has built in offsets for the motherboard and those that don't line up can short your motherboard. I lost a mobo because of that. I don't know if the mount holes for an ssi-ceb motherboard are the same as E-ATX/ATX, but if not, the built in motherboard offset mounts will rub against the back of your motherboard.

Other than that issue, it will easily fit a CEB motherboard.

CEB is not the same as EATX. It's a size in between ATX and EATX. EEB is the same size as EATX.

Also, just my opinion, but I don't want any case that has preformed standoffs formed into the tray. I'll take threaded holes and brass standoffs, thanks.

You're right, but it's about the mount holes. There's mixed messages everywhere about whether the ATX standards are the same as the SSI standards and it's hit and miss. I've had SSI-EEB motherboards that match EATX and some that don't. You can go on wikipedia and it'll say they're the same, but other forums say they're not and in my experience, the screw holes are different most of the time. That could be because supermicro have so many proprietary designs for their boards even if they call them SSI. I think it's best to only get a case that specifically states SSI support.

With the experience I've had with the 750d, I agree with you on never getting a case with preformed standoffs, it's a total pain in the arse. Ended up covering the unused ones with electrical tape so it wouldn't short the board.

Also to OP- unless you need the additional PCI-E lanes on the WS version of the motherboard, you should go for a lesser version. All the ASUS x79 non-gamer motherboards come with 8 memory slots which was the primary motivation for me to go x79. They all also support 2x 16x + 1x 8x slots. I have the lowest Asus x79 (LE version i think) and it's fantastic.

Yeah, documentation on mounting holes is spotty or entirely absent, but not usually a big deal if you have a traditional tray. I'm not shy about drilling a hole if there needs to be one...
