ST20G5 - Shuttle - Win7-32

So I am trying to bring back from the dead (again) my old shuttle st20g5.

I was hoping to make it into an HTPC or just a computer for surfing the net when guests are over.

I did the full OS install and it went well. I tried to do the windows patches and it crashes or they fail.

I have an ide dvd drive and a new WD 1tb sata HD. I have this idea that the bios doesnt like the HD for some reason. Since I cant install a bunch of updates, or there is just a hardware problem I cant load itunes and a few other programs, which I have never run into before.

Bios is updated, 2g of ram (which is the max, which sucks).

Any ideas ?

I would guess it's one of two things. The Bios and drivers are way out of date OR permissions problem in windows 7. Why do the patches crash? YOU CAN FIND THE LAST/LATEST bios here http://uk.shuttle.com/products/productsDownload?productId=87 and the latest drivers, including the correct SATA driver which is available thought google in quite a few places.
