I didn't know my pms where off how

Anyway, based on all the feedback and lots and lots of research
I was thinking about either Asus A8N-SLI Premium and then Tyan.

I actually have settled on Tyan motherboard, because it has a nforce Pro chipset.
and is a server/high-end workstation motherboard. Unfortunately, none of the retailers have it in stock, I called them. Some have ETA of late January.. so I'm going to look.
See if anyone will get it sooner.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I ordered Opteron 170, what a jump from X2 3800 heh.

Once I get all my parts, I will let you guys know about how it all went. I can't wait.

I'd be looking at the Opteron 165 or Opteron 170, stable, server grade, dual core, just what your looking for.

Got your pm but your setup to not allows pm's so here is the reply-

Mine had similiar requirements, but I think the other 4 pin is actually a molex like you would use to connect a hard drive.

here is a pic (it's big)

ftp://ftp.tyan.com/img_mobo/i_s2866G3NR.tif

With my board, you could use a normal 4 pin connector but they were not very clear as to which portion of the plug you are supposed to use so I just bought a new powersupply (needed one anyways). As long as you have a good ps, you should be good. You can also download the manual on the website in pdf form, and it should clear it up there. By the way, where did you find this board at?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but the message just got delivered to my inbox.

Ok, now got my pms working, didn't even know they were off.

Ribbon,

A8N32-SLI, sounds like a very good board. I looked at the chart here and it lists/recommends pro chipset for CAD workstation, 3d work etc. This is what I'm building it for. Also, pro chipset makes claims of stability and this is what I'm looking for. I was just freaked out about so many problems in nforce chipset previously. this is why I'm stearing towards Tyan pro Board.

Cananoes1d,

I actually have contacted Tyan tech support just recently, they said you need a power supply with "direct" EPS12V, this is what some intel dual core processors boards use, server boards, and high end workstations. I got Antec 550 EPS12V ordered already.
As for the board, I can't find it anywhere!!!! I've been calling places, all stores have it out of stock, with ETA in late January. Actually it's been appearing in more stores just in the last couple of days, but no stock, and sometimes no ETA.

Thanks all!

I know all about those chipsets having a both the 2200 and 2050 on my Thunder K8WE (See 3d workstation in sig). I've also used the Opteron 180 on the A8N32-SLI. Both are rock stable for the tons of rendering, animating, compositing and modeling I do. See, the new SLI X16 chipset is born from very similar silicon to the nForce4 Pro. These two chipsets have the same primary goal: A lot of PCI-e lanes. The nForce4 Pro is older, the X16 chipset is the exact same with more features, as I already linked earlier.

Motherboard to motherboard the Tyan doesn't stand a chance. I'd go as far as to say the A8N32-SLI is the stabler board with 8-Phase CPU power.

Ah. Powersupplies. Antec Sucks. Antec and Tyan don't get along historically. If you want stability, Antec is not a good choice at all... In fact they don't even appear on the Tyan list I have a Seasonic S12-600 on my K8WE. I wouldn't trust anything less. But maybe if you had some contingency like 8-Phase power your computer will at least be stable. Till your Antec blows up.

Ribbon,

The reason I went for Antec was because I couldn't find any other direct EPS12V power supplies, as opposed to ATX/EPS12V compatible, within a reasonable price. I called Tyan tech support on this one and they said any direct EPS12V would be good.
I did some searched and recommendations for atencs psus came up, no problems came up though though . Antec TruePower 2.0, TP2-550EPS12V in fact the same one in your links that you've provided about Tyan and Antec problems. I got it for 86 bucks from Monarchcomps and in fact in came in just today. It was too late to cancel since it was already been shipped .
Now with the links you've provided me with, I'm not yet sure how I want to handle this. Try returning it back or give it a try, since both Tyan and Antec did some testing and said could not find any problems, additionally, if there were known problems hopefully in the new board it was resolved.

As for the motherboard, A8N32-SLI, also seems like a very nice choice. I've had my heart settled on Tyan though for a while now. Eventhough, I'm also thinking about A8N-SLI.
The info you've provided me is great, didn't make me happy, but hey.. it's the truth, better to know it in advance...I just have to deicde what I to do with PSU and motherboard. I've ordered and recieved all parts, except for motherboard and video card. So I have a little time to think.....

Thanks for help all.

Hi,

Can you tell me more about your Nforce Pro chipset in terms of stability

Read that link: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=8171

I love AMD X2 CPU, but I cannot find an AMD stable board, you buy dual 400 DDR, but you can only use 333 DDR dual channel for stability. Something is wrong with this kind of chipset. Searching on internet and I see that happens to new mainboard A8N32-SLI Deluxe concerning data corrupted. The last thing I still wonder how about the Nforce 4 Pro chipset like on Nvidia website: Nforce Pro for stability and graphic demand.

Thanks in advance.

I use an Asus A8N-E with a Venice 3500 A64 CPU... it runs absolutely flawless. Never a lockup, crash, anything. It's rock stable, and I never reboot it... Always runs 100% load (SETI)... zero problems, AND the board is very affordable too. I vote A8N-E.

I can second that. I am using since July with A643700+, no problems. A minor issue was resolved with latest driver update from nVidia in early December. I also do not use built in nVidia firewall. And everything is stock. Very cool, very fast. I was only using Intel since last so many years, but am glad I changed. A year or so earlier I had major problems with Intel board (845/865 I think).

The A8N-E fan is running at high RPM, but not had any problems with it as such. It is easy enough to replace. Anyway the Rev. 2 new board has larger lower RPM more silent fan.

Whichever board you buy, make sure you first flash to latest non-beta bios by floppy as per mfr. instructions. This will help in CPU id (since you want X2).

I love AMD X2 CPU, but I cannot find an AMD stable board, you buy dual 400 DDR, but you can only use 333 DDR dual channel for stability.

?? I am running dual channel 400MHz, very stable. I have not faced any issue of data corruption. AFAIK, there were some issues with Maxtor SATA HDDs and that was because of Maxtor issue. Corrupted downloads was because of setting of nVidia firewall.

If you want AMDX2 CPU and do not want to overclock/adjust much, just go with any of the s939 boards suggested.

I don't buy normal Maxtor, only for 74 Gb Raptor. I test on Seagate, it has the same. You can manual dual channel 400, but it will lock up sometime if you run max with Prime95. I don't use Nvidia firewall, and I also use Marvell NIC instead. You are lucky having a good one, but not all of us. Besides, they agree officially about this stability on this kind of chipset platform.

Your machine can run, but how it runs last, that's matter.

Stability,

Your name even speaks it, eh =). I'm also looking for a most stable board.
When I started looking into AMD I got a little scared by all the problems posted
with nvidia chipset. Even some workstation review magazines mentioned those problems.

The whole reason I want to try nvidia pro chipset, is because I hope it's more stable.

Ribbon13, made some very good suggestions on chipsets.
Although I have my heart settled on Tyan board w/ pro chipset, I am tempted by his advise on A8N32-SLI.

Statistics wise, I don't think a lot of people use pro chipsets, so we don't hear a lot about it. On the opposite hand, most users of this forum probably have nvidia chipsets and you get more problems posted, as there is more people. Unfortunately, it doesn't make me feel any more confident still. This forum is full of problems and almost all kinds of boards.

As to your questions about stability, it can probably be true. On nvidia SITE they give a chart for purposes of every chipset. Also, for pro chipset they use term "stability" and such. Those could be simple marketing terms. As Ribbion has mentioned it, pro chipset is a bit older as opposed A8N32-SLI
I personally feel I'm ok with that though.

Hi id3dwiz

I just put my input on page 5 this thread:

Intel or AMD

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=28&threadid=1770059&enterthread=y

You can click at page 5:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...&STARTPAGE=5&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

I changed from A8N-SLI Premium to A8N32-SLI deluxe, I still not happy with my new mobo. Data corruption, drivers, USB compatibility, small space between slot, PCI slot issues.

Something is wrong here, brother. I like AMD Proc, but I lost the way to pick up a stable mainboard support X2 or Opty.

At retail store, they told me as you, Nforce 4 Pro chipset looks like maketing hype too. Maybe it's the same problem. We cannot conclude yet because no one tell us right?

If you have any more info, please come back here.
