Stability Issues Q9650

Heya guys,

for a while now, I clocked my quad back to 3.6 with one notch up from stock volt.
but for some reason, when I have my external HD's connected, and turned on, and turn on my pc, it reboots to default settings (3Ghz).

I do have to mention that I have 5 external drives hooked up.

anyone got any an idea as to what/why might cause this stability issue while booting?

It could be the fact that you are overloading your USB controller. When you boot up, the BIOS check on which devices are connected to what, which may mean that it is not stable.

Do not take every of my words though.

This is an unfortunate known issue with Gigabyte BIOSes. At least, my P35-DS3R v1.0 does it too. I dunno about the X48-DS5 that I used in a recent build, I should have tested it.

More than likely it's the RAM

buy a cheap DDR2 800 kit, like a 2x1Gb kit and try it again...

You should back your claim up a bit. Especially when you suggest to someone to spend money and effort and buy something.

What does his problem have to do with RAM? Be careful with claims.

I agree. This is the most logical conclusion.

Can you check whether this happens with 2,3,4 or 5 drives connected? Does it happen with only one or two drives?

I agree. No problem. I'll tell you my story.

I sold my first Q9650 for 150$ because I was having issues overclocking it. I think i was shooting for 3.8Ghz. I replaced it with a Q9550 because they were the rave and i didn't want to spend the $$$ on another Q9650... (the current Q9650 I have is and has always been running stock) ....back to the Q9550. I was on a UD3R board (p45) I had a DDR2 1000 kit. With the Q9550 I thought I had bought a lemon, I settled on 3.4Ghz .. after a while, 3.4Ghz started to fail. Kept doing P95, LinX, and Memtest86 tests... stability was an issue. I could not believe it was my ram, I thought it had to be my chip or my board. I bought a new Gigabyte UD3R board. Things were still failing under 3.4Ghz - the ram seemed an impossible problem because the memory test that everyone raves about, Memtest 86, it kept passing. By this time, I had sold a Q9650 for 150$ and bought a Q9550, fooled around with overclocking and testing some more, kept failing tests, bought another UD3R board, etc. (same ram kit) I thought, WTF... HMMMM... ok, i'll buy a ram kit and see what happens.. Bought a DDR2 800 Corsair 1.9v kit (2x1gb) kit and guess what happened.
