StableHost.com is an established and reputable web host which hosts several AT'ers. This is a great deal I look forward to every year and I might get a resellers account where you can host multiple domains. My only dilemma is whether to pick the $10 or $20 package minus 40% coupon =

Coupon: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1531325
Shared hosting: https://www.stablehost.com/web-hosting.php
Reseller hosting: https://www.stablehost.com/reseller-hosting.php

If you have any domain registration or web hosting questions, please ask away.

Doesn't look dead, but when I add the pro package + the code to my cart it says the coupon code has been added but nothing that qualifies for the code is valid

Same problem, WTF? Tried to sign up for pro, but the discount isn't applying.

Doh... you have to buy the 1 year plan or higher.

Monthly won't get the discount. No problem though... $25 for a year? Recurring? Great deal.

Can they host anything other than PHP? Node JS, hopefully?

I don't see Node.js as installable. I also didn't find anything about it in their community forums.

There is a TON of stuff you can install, though. This is better than my last PHP hosting site had, and a lot cheaper.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed.

When you change webhosts, do you need any kind of authorization/permission from the existing host or can you simply change the nameservers through godaddy (domain is through them)? The reason I ask is my current host suspended my account (someone hacked my site and used it for phishing) and I can't get them to respond to any of my requests. I have a backup of the site already.

So it's PHP only. If this were 1999, I'd be impressed. Oh well.

Traditionally if you purchase hosting from a quality provider they'll transfer the site for you but in your case that isn't an option. Assuming you have a full and proper cPanel backup, you or StableHost support should be able to restore it. If it doesn't work out they do offer a 45 day money back guarantee for qualifying services.

If your site was hacked, I would highly recommend reviewing all your scripts to ensure they're patched and up to date.

1) Purchase hosting before coupon expires.
2) Change DNS name servers at your domain registrar.
3) After DNS propogation (anywhere from 2 minutes to 24 hours) upload your site backup or ask StableHost support for assistance.
4) ... profit?

I've been on Stablehost for about 14 months now and am very happy. Up time and speed are excellent and they're great to deal with. When I signed up with them I used a webhostingtalk.com coupon code with a big discount for a year. When the year was up they sent me an invoice with the new price minus the new customer coupon code, so it was substantially higher. Contacted them and they applied the original discount to my account for life. If you need inexpensive and reliable hosting you're not going to find better for less.

It only took a couple minutes for the DNS to propagate once I switched the nameservers on GoDaddy for my domain - I had it parked there and redirecting to another site of mine after canceling my web.com account (tired of paying $20/month). My other domain is running on a microsoft stack, so I'm fine leaving that one up.

So far, I'm pretty pleased with what I see.

I'm sure there are hosting providers that offer node.js, but I would think it's probably rare and pricey? LAMP Stacks are pretty much it, unless you go with something like Azure and host your own virtual.

I wonder if that's their policy, a one time exception or they were just being nice? Regardless that's pretty awesome of them to do that.

Still contemplating whether to get a resellers account or not.

I worded the contact something like "okay, I could just leave for a month and come back with a different coupon code and pay a lot less. Is it good business practice to create an incentive for customers to leave?"

Customer retention is a big deal for any service you pay by the month, cell contracts, cable tv, internet, gym memberships, whatever, they almost all have wiggle room to cut deals for existing customers rather than losing them to a competitor.

That's a great line that I'll have to use in the future, glad it worked.

It probably means unlimited within reason, not 497GB or something outrageous like that. Did you read their TOS before signing up? I'm pretty sure somewhere in the wall of legal mumbo jumbo text it says using it as a backup server isn't allowed, although I could be wrong.

If you're looking for a cheap backup service, here are some suggestions listed in order of best to worst:
1) Backblaze Cyber Monday sale
2) Amazon Cloud Storage $5 for first year.
3) LowEndBox.com has numerous offers that will make you drool but 90% of them are crap and will go out of business. Do your homework, research, search for reviews, trust your gut.
