You can get Suse 9.1 Personal on an iso, then update what you want from their servers. I think you can essentially make it pro by downloading all the packages.

Holy crap, do I gather that they're shipping this anywhere for free? What an interesting policy given that they don't usually even supply iso downloads of Suse (far as I'm aware, which might not be very far ).

Thanks Zepper

I find it weird that I couldn't find links to this from anywhere on Novell's site. How did you find this Zepper?

Thanks for the linkage Zepper. I ordered it, I hope I get it soon.

I've never used Ximian, is it worth buying?

Yeah, this kit is really aimed at system admins, not noobs. Sorry... When you buy SUSE at a store, you actually get real paper manuals that are quite helpful to noobs, but still not particularly well organized. But don't be scared off as there is documentation that you can access once you have installed SUSE.
. It depends on what you want to install. Each disk has on the label what is contained therein and there should be a readme file or similar in the root directory of each disk with info about the programs and their installation.
. To install SUSE 9.1, just boot from the 3rd (2004 DVD 1C) disk. A lot of the other stuff is provided as ISOs (CD images) that need to be burned to your own CDs to use/install. If you don't know how to burn ISOs, then you have yet another learning opportunity. And some of the software is provided as .rpm files (Red HaT Package Manager). RPMs are softwares that are pre-assembled to install properly with those distributions that support the RPM package format (Red Hat, Fedora, Mandrake, SuSE, etc.). Once you have SUSE installed you can use YAST to install any of them that may be of interest.
. Some of the other evaluation software apparently requires the older (8.2) version which is included as a set of ISOs - info should be in the readme or other text files - unfortunately many of the text files don't seem to have the .txt extension on them but you can still read them with Notepad or whatever else you normally use to view your text files.
. If just stick a disk in while Win is running, a directory of the disk may pop up in an Explorer window and you can access the text files from there. Otherwise, just use Explorer to browse the DVDs.
. I just installed SUSE 9.1 and it went pretty smoothly.
. Go to the Novell and other web sites if there isn't enough info in the text files. You really should make an effort to educate yourself as to the purpose of each of the programs - so you can decide which ones to ignore. A lot of the stuff is of little use to the typical desktop/stand-alone computer user.
. Have fun!

It's  time!

NO!! you cannot do it anyway. if you want to install the server from disk 1 you will have to make the 3 ico cd's. Disk 3 is the one with suse 9 and you have to install it using the bootable dvd #3
If you put each disk in a dvd drive it has several readme files that are pretty usefull.
I had a really hard time getting mine going but it is pretty nice.

There are lots of web sites out there for help with Linux. Start with http://www.Linux.org and check out its Linux 101 tutorials. Then go from there. Good luck!

Hmmm, I guess I did get a shipping notice. It should have arrived a few days ago, but I guess it was going to my mom's house. I'll swing by there soon.

I wonder if using it for a week would be long enough for an Anandtech OS forum minireview by n0cmonkey himself? Would that even interest anyone?

You bet! I can't tell you how much info I have picked up from you, nothingman, drag and others here on these forums over the years... thanks for all the nuggets of info you have taken the time to provide!

I hope I get my order at all.

What I don't understand is why doesn't Novell setup a bittorrent link.. It seems like the most sane thing to do.

My order took a while to get shipped, so don't fret. Worst case scenario, I'll send you mine or copies of mine.

Mine will probably just sit on a shelf for a while after I'm done with it. I've got a couple of Solaris box sets doing that now.
