My only real complaint with the games is how, in general, money doesn't mean anything.

I remember playing through SoC and collecting weapons, running back to the starting town, collecting more weapons, running back to starting town... Kind of playing it like an RPG. In the end I don't think I spent hardly anything on *anything* except the occasional ammo restock if I found myself overusing one particular weapon.. Half the time I'd just discard that weapon for something else I found that happened to use ammo I had on-hand. Most of the weapons were easy as pie to headshot with at any mid/long range distance, so no huge incentive to upgrade those aside from whatever you stumble across. I blazed through CoP by just disregarding this aspect and using whatever I found, only took a few hours to finish it (mostly because stupid sections of the games kept getting repopulated by hordes of AK-wielding turds)

I don't really think of STALKER as a "survival game." There are some survival-lite components just to aid in the sense of immersion, but it was not designed for that to be a core game mechanic.

Nor was it designed to be an RPG gear grind. I think it would be really lame if you took out a group of soldiers and all of their stuff magically disappeared, or if common weapons were so inaccurate or weak that it created an artificial need to keep upgrading.

The whole point of STALKER to me is cover-driven combat, environment / art direction, and story.

For me, anyway, it doesn't add anything to the game to raise the price of band-aids or make sure 90% of the NPCs are only carrying broken junk (even though half of them are military).

Some people might approach it a completely different way - - so I'm glad we have options thanks to all the modders out there.

If you make it easier with mods, doesn't it defeat the purpose of bolded though? Find it hard to believe the vanilla game is too hard on novice difficulty level. Master wasn't even that difficult.

I only ever played it with Complete so I don't know if it would have been better without. But it is one of my all time favorite games so it couldn't have done too much harm. I also really liked the graphics upgrades with Complete.

Got the game on the Steam sale last week and couldn't feel more like a fish out of water. Any advice for a newbies first playthrough{vanilla}?

Do not play this game before playing STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky. You must beat these before going into Clear Sky.

Feel free to ignore me, but you wont get the full experience and you wont get a good sense of the story, thereby ruining your overall impression of this wonderful series.

I played CoP first, and I think I would have been better off to have played ShoC first. I had no idea about anything when I played it through the first time, because CoP is really more of a side-story than anything (but a good one).

If one truly wants to experience The Zone chronologically, they should start with Clear Sky. I hesitate to recommend that, though, because I think a lot of people might not stick with it if they start there.

I love Clear Sky, but I think it might turn a lot of people off to the series. I just wish ShoC had a lot of the components that made CoP so interesting.

Always good to see people discussing (and playing) the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. While you guys do so I'd like to point at a mod called S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Chernobyl.

So I tried this. Superb concept in bringing all the maps together, but the graphic quality is off. I'm not sure what's going on, but the lighting is just dead...not even as good as vanilla ShoC.

Super excited it's out there, though...because I'm sure modders will make it good. I think with this platform, we could end up with something far better than Lost Alpha. Heck, it's already a lot more fun that Lost Alpha in its current state. I could spend days in here.

advice:

bind a useful key (like E or Q) to use medikits/bandages.

do not carry too much weight; it makes you slower AND use more stamina when running.

grab a decent gun asap; the 5.56 models are better than the 7.62. save your AP ammo.

sell (almost) all the artifacts - they are your best bet to get enough $$$ to buy a good armor. you will know which ones to keep.

once you have a decent armor (Bulat) and a scoped, suppressed TRs 313, you will be good for 90% of the game.
it does wear out quickly and starts to jam easily when dirty, but you should not need to use it that much - headshots and stealth will take care of most stuff.

you really want to engage long distance as often as possible; close combat will leave you bleeding in a second, and you are no more effective anyway.

Tap-firing is the way to go; do not fire full auto. You have a key that selects your fire mode. Also, full auto ruins guns faster.

The AK family of guns is meh; the short one won't hit anything past 5 feet and the full sized one is inferior to the TRs on range, accuracy, cost of ammo, and unreliable to headshot.
If you find a IL86, use it until you get a TRs, but don't spend money on it.

The Thunder is actually a good gun, hard hitter, but has a small magazine, and you only get it when you already have the GP37 or the equally viable SGi-5k, which are your end-game guns. Also uses weird ammo, and you get caught reloading EVERY F**** TIME.

The FT-200M is unmoddable and has more recoil than the SG, TR or GP. The SG is my preferred gun, it is almost identical to the GP, can be modded for 100% accuracy, and has a better scope. The GP has a weird scope, hits slightly harder but has slightly inperfect aim at long distance.
ALWAYS mod guns for less recoil, higher accuracy, and reliability. Never mod guns for rate of fire or damage, you will get a useless weapon that can't hit anything and jams immediately.

The SVD family is .. useless. One of the two is not 100% accurate, the other one is, but it's also heavy, expensive, and totally redundant because a fully kitted out TRs has less recoil, same pinpoint accuracy, same level of deadliness, you can use it at close range, and it uses normal ammo.

The Vintars are hard hitters, but they have the worst projectile trajectory ever. Use them only for stealthy CQC or better yet, sell them.

Once you get your exoskeleton, you won't have to worry about nothing. Just explore and kill everything you find.

When starting out, just avoid firefights; my best run in CS i just found a bunch of Military guys fighting some stalkers, and i grabbed an AK from the ground that one of the guys had. Just scout, find artifacts, loot everything, sell and buy a TRs.

You CAN run from firefights; if you are doing a "help us" mission, just hang back and pewpew with your pistol to provide some moral support (because your guns are useless anyway). You will get your bonus and not lose money on bandages / medikits / ammo / repairs. Seriously though, shotguns, don't even look at them.
They might be handy with a few mutants but are useless anywhere else. You should really not consider attacking anything until you have at least a Viper (9mm SMG), and even that is pathetic and can only kill from close range.

Don't be afraid to make multiple trips to pick up and sell enemy guns.

As soon as you find a TRs / AK, sell your pistol and its ammo - you need to save on weight.

I have never bothered with explosives, they just never hit anything, cost too much money and should be sold, and they weight. The RPG (yes, it's in the game) and the grenade launcher are useless and weight a shitton.

Keep your Army and Scientific medikits.

Get a Tier-3 detector ASAP. Don't be ashamed of quicksaving a lot.

That's all, you should be good to go now.

I agree with the above.....just get a TRs, scope, and silencer and you're set.

I do carry some grenades for Controllers and pseudo-giants.
