Wow that bites. I agree the games were a bit buggy and required you to be a bit more involved but once things got rolling I was always hooked on them.

Matter of fact, I'm sure most of you are aware of the "Complete Mod" by now. But they've finally done it for Call of Pripyat earlier this year. Game is amazing. The textures, environmental effects, sound effects - all awesome.

Never could get into stalker much. I remember playing oblivion then stalker SoC and thinking to myself:

"if only they could make a fun easy to get into game with a decent engine (none of that loading screen between areas BS) but with the setting/atmosphere of stalker it would be epic!"

Later bethesda delivered fallout 3 and the rest is history :awe:

Gamebryo a decent engine, no loading between areas? You sure you played Fallout 3? Not that X-Ray was anything more than a dated engine with a lot of coats of paint, but still...

Damn...

I'm not sure, I don't know what to say. I liked all the STALKER games. Farewall GSC, I think they tried well anyway, with the little they had they managed well enough for SoC, Clear Sky was "ok". I think that CoP was an improvement in game-play over Clear Sky, but in my opinion not quite there with its atmosphere, which I think SoC did the best of the three. The sequel would have undoubtedly been a multi-platform release, ending up as a port for the PC version, which might have turned the series into some generic consolized shooting FPS mess.

Ah well, I'll keep playing the trilogy from time to time, I still have some nice mods for SoC and CoP around in my files.

Fallout 3 had the "setting/atmosphere" or STALKER? Not even remotely close, IMO.

The two games are so different from each other that they really don't warrant comparison.

I absolutely loved STALKER and played through it about 10 times over the years. Game companies can go on and on about how interesting their enemies are, but I still have not seen a shooter that came anywhere near STALKER's mutants. That loud screaming thing that shoots a wave of force down a tunnel at you... both unique and actually scary.

Sad day. I was looking forward to a sequel.

That part is memorable for me and conveys both good and bad memories. Loved that bit of the action, sent me into a panic. Was feeling quite motion sick by that point, I thought my ears and eyesight were starting to go and then it stopped when I killed that 'thing'.

Needless to say I saved the game and went to curl up and die.

Fallout 3 having the same setting and atmosphere as STALKER? Surely you kid. Fallout 3 can't even touch STALKER in terms of atmosphere and immersion, IMO.

They're very different, but I'd put their atmosphere/immersion at par. I loved both.

Agreed. Nothing can touch the STALKER series for atmosphere and immersion.

Great concept, but the execution was off a bit. Still good games, but they could have been legendary.

Yup. MY favorite was when it first released somebody rushed to the end like a normal run and gun and then came on the forums to declare how stupid the game was because the ending sucked and just had the guy die under a shower of money.

I've never in all my days seen a single player fps beat a player so bad they didnt even know it.

STALKER: Open-world RPG tactical shooter based in post-disaster Ukraine with fantastic weather effects, atmosphere, and immersion.

Fallout 3: Walking around DC and shooting stuff in slow-motion.

FO3 isn't a bad game; but if I really wanted to walk around and shoot stuff in slow motion, I'd play a real shooter like FEAR. To call Fallout 3 a shooter would be a great insult to the shooter genre (compared to Stalker, which has better more realistic weapon feel, recoil, and ballistics). The combat, the storyline, and the engine in FO3 are all terrible. If it were a linear game instead of open-world, it would have literally nothing going for it.

Gamebryo is buggy but its still 100x better than what they used in stalker.

Again, I'm gonna have to disagree. STALKER can be quite gorgeous. And unlike FO3, everything doesn't look piss-yellow colored.

I wouldn't describe STALKER as post-apocalyptic. It takes place in a relatively small area that was effected by a reactor explosion. The rest of the world is doing just fine.

FO3 doesn't really have much in the way of FPS mechanics (select a body part and let the computer shoot it for you... ). The game is more of an adventure / RPG in a first-person perspective. The fact that they're both sandbox-style games is about the only real similarity I see.

The art direction is vastly different. STALKER is everything from haunting to beautiful. Fallout is pretty much a grey junkyard of broken concrete and dirt.

This, so much.

Stalker is my TOP 3 games ever. The immersion is simply unmatched. Playing the game at 2am, wandering around the Zone, going back to base after a long haul, low on ammo and supplies, low on health, at night, and hearing dogs start barking is one of the most terrifying experiences ever.

I didn't mind the bugs because they were all fixed by community mods, and the last official patch, did a decent job at fixing most of the bugs.

That was an option, I played through on my first time without using that once. I have no idea why people keep posting that.

WTF here...I felt Stalkers tried too hard to be atmospheric, whereas FO3 was quite natural about it.
As for the shooting, Stalkers are a turd, 2D looking weapons with sticky gun mechanics and questionable hit detection, plus, FO3's shooting is greatly improved if you crouch, zoom, and have a decent amount of points in small/big guns.....that said, FO3 is definitely more "gamey" but I say bring it on.

Keeping in mind that I thoroughly played and enjoyed Fallout 3, "natural" is the last word I'd use to describe its atmosphere. The bolded also applies to STALKER. People are too used to the Call of Duty absurd notion of having near-perfect aiming especially when spraying full-auto. STALKER games definitely had a better grasp of bullet and aiming physics than the average FPS. (The complete mods definitely help the gameplay though)

what? no one blamed piracy? wtf

I actually have a feeling Steam was a factor. I haven't played all three STALKER games yet, but for the price Steam was offering during the holiday, GSC couldn't be making that much off of it.
