These are HOT I think and NO rebates to haggle with..

American ( just opened in my area. 133k sq ft store! ). Digix DV-288 DVD/MP3/VCD player $38 + tax

** I have this one already. I paid $50 at outpost for mine about 3 months ago and love it. Plays
all my cheap dvd-r media with no problems.

Best Buy ( online and B&M ) has the KLH KD1220 DVD/MP3/VCD player. Also does picture cd's etc etc.

$39.99 + tax. = $43.19 here in my state out the door.

** I bought one of these today for a b-day present. I am debating about returning the KLH and getting
the digix since I already know the digix is good. Anyone own the KLH?

Buy giftcards from someone and get even better price.

I don't own the KLH, but it looks from the reviews I have seen that it is a typical low-end DVD player. A similar model from KLH at Amazon had an average rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars. With both of these, you get what you pay for. You might be better off spending $20 more and getting a better name brand.

Well I dunno about that. I mean I own the Digix and it works well for me and what I use it for. It
plays my cheap dvd-r media without skipping which is a major plus. Now the KLH I don't know a
think about and might return it and buy another digix.

I've noticed that Digix has pulled a fast one on consumers. The original Digix DV-288 (came in a Blue Box) included Component Video outputs. There is a newer version that comes in a Purple box that does not include Component Outputs.

If you don't have a Component Capable TV, this shouldn't matter to you. But if you do, be careful.

This is based on the DV-288 that sells at Fry's Electronics.

Personally, I own the KLH KD-1220 and think it's an incredible value. Not only do you get Component Video Outputs (no guessing..they are definately there), you also get both optical and coaxial digital outputs, and WMA support (which the Digix does not have).

I picked up the Digix a few weeks ago. It now switches randomly from color to Black and White (sort of - hard to explain), but mostly to black and white.

I've tried fiddling with the "Video Output" menu items, but it doesn't seem to help at all. I guess I'm going to see if the warranty service is any good, unless somebody else has some ideas on how to fix it?

Take it back to where you bought it at, and demend a new one. There's no reason to send a product for repair after only a few weeks of use.

Yep.. Take your digix back to where you bought it. If you bought it
from a decent retailer then they will atleast exchange it or give
you store credit.

I got luck on the Digix I guess. I got the one in the blue
box with component outs.

Keep the KLH, it's a kick as player. It has all the connections you would need including component, coaxial and optical digital outs. It played a burned DVD-R with no problem. I can't speak to the Digix, but the KLH is great.

Do a search and you will find more opinions and support for the KLH.

I picked up the KLH at the $38 price point from Best Buy (used my $25 "I'm sorry about the Apex TV" gift certificate on it to make it even cheaper). Its definitely a low-end DVD player but I bought it to replace my $150 Toshiba which died just after its warranty ran out. I bought the Toshiba to replace the $350 Pioneer that also died just after its warranty ran out. I figure at $38 the DVD player's planned obsolescence won't be so painful as with the other DVD players.

The KLH has done a good job so far. It has a decent picture. For some reason the picture is much lighter than with my Toshiba (I had to turn the TVs brightness down a lot to get a comparable picture when using the KLH).

It also gets confused about ejecting the DVD. Sometimes the eject button works sometimes it doesn't (goes for both the player's button and the remote). The non-responsiveness seems to be associated with the DVD player 'loading' the DVD's content. Once the 'loading' has completed I can eject the DVD.

Also, the player can't be turned on via the remote. You must do so via a button on the player itself. The remote can place it in and pull it out off a standby mode though.

I was pleased to learn that it has lots of outputs including (for video) composite (of course), svideo, component, and (for audio) analog as well as both flavors of digital (coax & optical). I'm using composite video (older TV) and coax digital to my receiver for the sound.

Does anybody play DVDs from public library on these? My public library puts a thick plastic sticker on the top that covers entire disk (printed side) with additional 0.5 " X 2" inch bar code anti-theft sticker. These DVDs are obviously heavy and off-balanced. They do not play in my Daewoo. The whole entertainment center just vibrates and I see disk error when I play one those DVDs. The DVDs play OK in my computer's old 4X DVD drive.
