So IBM decided to use a 14pin connector on these things, it's pretty common to get or make an adapter these days, and I did pick one up. Trouble is, it won't work consistently with my Seasonic X850.
It seems to be OK under load, but if you leave it sit for a length of time between ten minutes and half an hour, it just turns off leaving the power light on the case on and requires power cycling the PSU to come back on.
I have two observations, one this board does not use 3.3v, and the 5v it uses is not from one of the
pins on the x850 that has a voltage sensing wire. And the 3.3 has voltage sense as well. I was able to jumper the voltage sensed 5.5 to the one the adapter uses to feed the motherboard so in theory that has a good load now, but could not having any 3.3v load from the mobo be making it flip out after some time at idle? I would think it would not come on at all if it was unhappy with it, but I'm unsure. Also thought some peripherals would be using 3.3v via the SATA power plug, but I'm not sure if they are on the same rail as the ones to the 24pin connector. Also, is it possible this PSU is just so much overkill it's below some sort of load threshold at idle and turning off?
I know the PSU is overkill, I had it on hand and I'd like to use it so I can transplant the guts from this into a case I favor is all. It's perfectly fine with it's stock PSU otherwise. Mostly I just want to know what the problem is for the sake of knowing. Many, many people use these adapters with no issue, it's pretty straight forward. I have an older antec 450w I borrowed from a spare box to test with hooked up now to see if it behaves the same, it too senses on 3.3 via brown wire and has no load there but it does not do voltage sensing elsewhere the way the Seasonic does.
Thoughts?
edit: The 450w Antec plain jane model seems to be perfectly fine, been on all day from idle to heavy load, no problems.
