Are standard CAT5 cables capable of BOTH 10mbps and 100mpbs?

Im using a 24 port BocaNET (have no idea of the value, age, features)...and 10/100 network cards...

...1 meg/second seems to be the max. (around 900 k/sec average)

I was thinking the 24 port hub MUST be capable of doing 100mpbs (up to 10 megs/sec?) since it has SO MANY ports....so only conclusion i can draw is :

-regular cat5 are limited to 10mpbs
-cat5e cables will let me transfer @ up to 10megs/sec

.....right?

Thanks guys!

Cat5 is just the cabling standard. You can use it for speaker wire if you feel like it. It has NOTHING to do with what you run across it.

4 twisted pairs (8 wires) CAT5 cable can run both 10mbps and 100mbps networks.

Why do you think a hub has to do 100mpbs just becuase it has a lot of ports? Before Ethernet they used coax which you didn't need hubs for you could have as many computers as you want on a coax chain...so say you had a 20 computer coax chain you want to switch to 10baseT ethernet...you need a 20+ port 10baseT hub.

My guess is the hub isn't capable of 100baseTX, if you are sure all your ethernet cards are. Regular 4 pair CAT5 cable with RJ45 connectors can run 100baseTX networks fine.

Your problem is with your hub, not your cables. Your hub sounds like it's only a 10 mbit hub/switch. Boca's not even in business anymore. If your hub/switch is 100mbps, it will have two sets of leds on it. One that says 10mbps and one that says 100mbps. These leds are meant to be an indicator of current connection speed.

Category 5 was made for 100 mbps and is perfectly capable of 100mbps. Broadcom corp even produces chips that push gigabit speeds down cat5 (but they can only achive ~600mbits).

If you want 10meg/sec on your network, you may need to use unix/linux or win2000. My unscientific survey on a prior Anandtech thread showed that win9x is only capable of about 5meg/sec because of it's crummy network implementation.

I believe Cat5 is capable of handling fast ethernet (100 Mbits) and Cat5e can handle gigabit ethernet (1000Mbits).

1Byte(capital, B)= 8bits

10Mb/sec=1.25MB/sec. Your speed 900-1000KB/sec is the typical for 10Mb/sec network.

If you use 10/100Mb/sec. NIC (Network Card), it still will stay at the same speed (10Mb/sec.) with your current Hub.

If you need faster network get a 100Mb/sec. Switch, they cost few $$$ more then a Hub, but they offer a full duplex smoother network.

100Mb/sec Network is 12.5MB/sec theoretical transfer.

A nice deal on a switch.

cat3 = 10
cat5 = 100
cat5e = 350 or 1000 depending on the whatever. <----- never tested this myself.

in megabits per second
