I've basically narrowed my choice of a new 42" HD-TV to a panasonic plasma and samsung DLP. I haven't been able to compare both in standard mode...has anyone done the comparison?

Agreed, but I believe there's a premium. But why not Pioneer? My experience with Panasonic is they deliver great price but mediocre quality. Pioneer just kills everyone in plasma.

They're pretty much the same exact price (the plasma recently had a price drop to $1299, which is where the DLP is at)

Panasonic is well regarded as having just about the best plasma screens in their price range. They are rated very well.

Which size DLP? 1080p?

That Samsung 56" 1080p DLP for $1,849 free shipping @ Amazon is a sweet deal.

Subjective assessment? I'm not saying they're not good. They're a good VALUE. Look at someone else's post

Panasonic is well regarded as having just about the best plasma screens in their price range. They are rated very well.

They're obviously not going to compete with Pioneer's Elite series. That's all I'm saying.

Isnt it going to look crappy on either one?

i hate SD. Once you've had a taste of HD , it can't compare

The Samsung 42" DLP has a noticeable drop in quality from the rest of the DLP line, so between 42" plasma and 42" DLP I'd probably go with the plasma.

If it's between a 42" 720p plasma and a 50" or 56" 1080p Samsung DLP I'd definitely go with the DLP.

My 50" 1080p DLP works quite well for SD comcast cable signals, as well as 480i DVD, even VHS tape looks decent.

SD looks ok on DLP and Plasma. DLP should indeed perform slightly better. In either case it's all better than LCD. My eyes burn when I watch SD on my Bravia XBR2 =/

My roommate just got his 42" Panasonic Plasma yesterday. (60U?) And it's gorgeous. Even with digital (non-HD) cable, it looks great!

Which panasonic are you referring to for 1200? Make sure it isnt the EDTV version.. You should get the 60U or 600U at the least..

I have an S-video converter I linked to my VCR's composite output, it gives much better results than hooking straight to the television. S-Video seems the preferred input for SD signals. You don't need the converter if your VCR has an S-video out, though obviously the best methods are either to run some filtering through a PC card or a digital box.

Yes, I have the 60U and the SD looks good with the FIOS, but Comcast (Digital) looked like total ass! The carrier makes a difference apparently.

Digital SD through TimeWarner actually looks fairly decent/good on the 56" 5687W Samsung 1080P in our den.

FIOS is high bitrate digital for every channel.

Digital cable is analog for the first 80 or so channels, low bitrate mpeg for the next 100 or so SD channels, and highly compressed HD. Around here at least...never heard of it different elsewhere though.

Add to cart and you'll see the price. I've decided to pull the trigger on this model after all...

Awesome TV. Great price. Is tweeter a well known reputable dealer though?

At $1299 for the HDTV model TH42PX60U why would anyone buy the EDTV for $1200?
http://www.tweeter.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2185214

OP: Pull the trigger on the 60U ... That is an unreal price...

From reading Resellerratings.com, not too many satisfied customers in the past, nothing recent though.

Enough said. I'd be willing to bet my house that they are located somewhere in Brookyln, NY

I knew something wasn't right.. My cost on the TH42PX60U is around $1600.
