I usually format my mp3 filenames 'Artist - Album - Track - Title.mp3' but lately I've seen a lot of filename formats similar to track_artist_-_the_title-comment.mp3 which I always wonder why use all those _ for? What is everyone's standard mp3 filename format?

I'll use my FB2K liter as my example for how I list it: %ALBUM ARTIST% -- %ALBUM% - %DISCNUMBER% - %TRACKNUMBER% - %TITLE%-%DATE%, or with music: 1454. Rush - [Counterparts #03] Cut To The Chase

track number - song title. I only have albums and all my songs are tagged very precisely.

I do the following for mine (provided there is more than one song for the artist and has more than one song on the album that I keep):

My Music\Arist\Album\Artist - Song Title.mp3

If I have more than one song for the artist but don't know the album (or only have one song from it):

My Music\Artist\Artist - Song Title.mp3

If I only have one song from the artist:

My Music\Artist - Song Title.mp3

If it's a compilation/soundtrack with various artists: Track No. - Artist - Song Title in its own folderView
For other albums, Artist - Album - Track No. - Song Title View

Random mp3s dumped in a single folder (not from full albums): Artist - Title

I have a "less is more" thing.

Music Directory\Album Artist\Year - Album\Tracknumber - Title

That way all the major tags are represented in the directory structure, and there are no repeats!

Artists are arranged alphabetically.

Albums are arranged chronologically.

Tracks are arranged as they would be on the actual CD.

Isn't that amazing?! Well, I think so.

Various Artists are a little different, but with the same idea.

Music Directory\Various Artists (one folder for all VA music)\Album - Year\Tracknumber - Artist - Title

The underscores are just there to replace spaces... some OSes don't allow spaces in filenames. Use a file renamer to replace them with spaces.

I don't listen to MP3s anymore, but when I did I just used Artist - Song.mp3 as the filename. No track number or album name.

I organize by folders first.
-Artist
--Album

Then the filenames: Track number - name.mp3

\Artist\Album\00 - Track Name.mp3

doesnt matter as long as the ID3 tag is completely correct in winamp/itunes and the song name is in the filename.

The filename I use is "Artist-Songname".

Why does that matter? Aren't the id3 tags working for you?

I do \artist\album\artist - album - track # - song name.... the lengths get long but its never really an issue.

when pirate music groups uploaded stolen CDs they use _ instead of spaces.
