This year, since the deals were so ******, I chose to stay at home and order online and get whatever I could. I was pro-active and called Staples Corporate a week before. I spoke with a friendly gal who seemed to know what she was talking about. However, in the end, she screwed me.

I asked when the deals would appear online and she said 6AM my local time. Being in the business, I know it is all but impossible to deliver time appropriate web page unless you know where the user is from, so I triple checked with her saying "How is it possible for Staples to know what time zone I am in when I haven?t logged in yet." She said she didn?t know, but she did know they could.

I woke up at just a touch before 5AM so I checked the site. Nothing there yet on the specials. Went back to sleep and woke up again at 5:40, checked the site for the hell of it and sure enough the specials were already up AND a message stating they went up at 5AM my time.

Knowing what was going to happen I clicked on the monitor anyway and sure enough "OUT OF STOCK". Needless to say I was less than happy, particularly since the online deal was $30 better than the instore.

Anyways, I added the HD, the DVD drive, and the DVD media. Then I clicked the Laminator which I have been trying to get for 3 years now. Like 99.9999% of the people who want them, I don?t really need one and don?t really have a use for it, but would still like one, yet every year they are the first thing to go. Go figure.

Going to the checkout I notice the total look high, damn high. After stumbling around for 15 minutes I find THERE IS A GD COUPON CODE BURIED AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF EACH PRODUCT PAGE. So I gather all them up and try to enter them at checkout. Of course, they will not work. Server first times out, then says they are invalid, then the HD comes up and shows OOS.

A friend of mine, who is an IT dude and very computer and Internet savvy got hammered by the same thing. He had to call later in the day to get his order corrected and the coupons added. He said it was obvious Staples had been getting calls all day long on the damn hidden coupons.

By this time I am, well, not too happy, so I call Staples. Hoping to order, but mainly to eat out someone?s ass, anyone who works for this place.

I end up getting a nice lady on the phone after about 5 minutes and I get my stuff on order. I convey my disappointment and she apologizes.

When I went to the local B/M store later, they still had 12 or so Samsung monitors in stock.

Personally, I believe people should let Staples know how hiding the coupons was not only customer unfriendly, but could be considered by some as borderline fraud and certainly instills a sense of distrust into the customers.

Our problem is, since we are in a small market, there is no where else locally to buy. Staples is the ONLY local office type superstore. Best Buy was claiming to be here by this Christmas, but no way that?s gonna happen this year since they haven?t even started construction yet.

I was speaking with another friend of mine who also owns his own business. Even though both of our businesses are small, we both know pissing off your customers is not the way to gain business. Oh well.

Cliff notes man, cliff notes!

"Cliff notes man, cliff notes!"

Staples tried to cheat their customers and their web site was broken.

Yada, Yada, Yada

I had the Lobster Bisque, ah no I mean, I got most of what I wanted.

Ditto that here. Too bad only beige was available though. I'm really liking the Logitech MX3000 desktop I picked up. Granted it was no smoking deal by any means, but still like it!

I got the HD online, but that's AFTER I went to the BM and found they'd gone in 10 minutes. Why I got it online (and five hours later) I don't know, but, hey, I'll take it. Never even knew about the coupons. Bad PR!

For all those who routinely go to Staples or OM, a national survey was done not too long ago that showed that LOCAL stationery stores were actually cheaper than the big chains on most items. The big chains have more loss leaders, but if you want to support your local store - and I live in a small town - you can not only help your local small business, but save money, too.

I stopped by the Staples in Columbia, MD around noon on BF, and surprisingly they had about 10 of the 200 GB Maxtors available for $29AR. I picked up 2.

Got my online ordered DVD-R drive, and I got a Lite-on. The drive seems very quirky when it comes to speeds. It will not burn my Maxell 8x +Rs at 4x, and it will not burn any media I have over its specified speed. The upside is I can finally use Kprobe, and the scans all look good.

Maybe try putting on some of the better firmware that is out there? That's the one thing I liked about having a LO drive, the f/w is hacked up the wazoo for all sorts of goodies.

My Staples (Cedar Hill, TX) was really prepared. They had employees outside working the crowd an hour before opening, handing out donuts to all and coupons to those first in line so you were sure of getting what you came for. When I got home, I noticed the register hadn't printed out a rebate form for the paper shredder. Went back Saturday and found out they had put the wrong shredder on the free table -- it wasn't on sale. However, without my even having to ask, they issued an ins-store rebate equal to the amount of the purchase and apologized for me having to come back in.

Since I also got one of the 10" Samsungs (really NICE!), I now needed new speakers -- my old CRT had built-in speakers. While at Staples Saturday, I picked up a set of Altec Lansings, regular price $49.95, sale $39.95, and black Friday rebate of $20.00. Black Friday was over, but the sign was still up. No problem -- the speakers rang up at $49.95, they knocked off $30.00 for the black Friday sale price and the rebate, and only charged me $19.95. Pretty nice speakers for a non-gamer, without the rebate hassles. Hat's off to my Staples!

I also picked up the STI Mobile cell phone -- a Samsung A660 for $100. with a $100. EasyRebate. This is a pre-paid phone -- no activation charges, no monthly charges. I bought a $25.00 card and will get up to 250 minutes ($.12/min weekdays, $.10/min nights and weekends). This is a great deal for a low volume user. The reception is great, and the coverage is the entire Sprint/PCS network.

That was the first thing I did after hooking it up. It is a SOHW-1693S updated to KS0B. I usually burn at 4x for better quality. However, the the scans look good at 8x so no big loss. At least it was not a BTC.

I submitted my rebates two-and-a-half weeks ago and they arrived one-and-a-half weeks after I submitted them (four rebates, $100 in all). I couldn't believe it! This might be a rebate-time world record!

I'm now sold on Staples and their Easy Rebates and won't be afraid to buy a rebate-item from Staples again.

The two rebates for the two things I bought at staples on BF still have a status of "Validation in Progress" as well.

They might not be sending out the rebate checks yet since Staples extended the return date for holiday purchases (beginning Nov 24) to Jan 7. Probably don't want people returning stuff after they get a check, not that anyone here would ever do that. I would wait and see if things start moving after the 7th.
