I was in Staples today turning in an accumulation of ink cartridges for the $3 off anything coupons. The clerk pointed out to me a sign on the counter that said effective 9/17/06 they were only going to be accepting cartridges from a couple of manufacturers-HP, Lexmark, and one other, I think.

I know that they will NOT be accepting Canon cartridges after 9/17, because that's what I have and all I was concerned with.

Better hustle down there now.

EDIT: TODAY, SATURDAY 9/16, IS THE LAST DAY TO TRADE IN ANY EMPTY CARTRIDGES. After today, Staples will take only HP, Lexmark and Dell cartridges.

Yes, it sucks. But the reason for this from what I was told is because they're getting so many empty carts for so many different printer manufacturers that they can't possibly refill and sell them all, and that they now have to limit what they can accept.

All the carts from epson, canon, brother, etc. that they can't refill and sell just get tossed into the trash out back. And even with the HP, Dell, and Lexmark carts that they do take, they only keep certain ones to refill and sell. The others just get trashed.

That's how they're able to sell their own brand of carts... by refilling and selling empty carts people bring in to recycle. Notice that they only sell certain Staples-brand carts for certain printer models. If they get a empty cart for a certain manufacturer and model they don't offer a Staples equivalent of, then in the trash it goes.

When I heard this, I got really pissed. :| They don't care that they're polluting the environment with all those carts they're throwing out. They just care about the $$$ they make from refilling and selling their own brand of carts.

Let;s clarify something the cart. that Staples use to recycle never went back to their own company to refill and resell they went back to a 3rd party vendor. Also staples only sell a limited amout of replacement cart for Dell HP and lexmark. Usually the older ones that can be reman. Not the new series such as 96 98 88
The biggest reason that they changed the program is due to customer abuse. Someone bringing in Canonn carts. getting 3 bucks each when you can buy them for under 2 bucks.

Thump553 & mdcrab can't help with stapels cartridge trade in program however if you use canon printer with #6 ink check out neximaging.com out of Baltimore,MD for third party ink cartridges usually around 1.59 each when you get 3 of the same cartirdges.

Could part of it be that (crappy) 3rd party generic ink clogs print heads...and the Staples people finally have had it with the complaints? Just notice that Canon/Epson's mainly do not have print heads built into the cartridges but rather a much more sensitive, separate print head.

I suspect that very few of the cartridges were actually refilled and this was primarily a PR prgram to show how environmentally sensitive Staples was. Problem was, the program cost them too much most likely, so they will be limiting it to those that they can actually get some $ for.

This notice was mostly a heads up that if you have been procrastinating about bringing the cartridges in, do it before the 17th.

Thanks for the link to this company. Prices look decent--I have an old Epson Laser printer and the Epson toner is about $160. They sell a compatible cartridge for under $60. Sweet!

So, if you bring in 6 hp deskjet cartridges you get something like a gift card for $18.00?

Bring your Ink Cart. to OfficeMax, we give you $3 off (up to 10 cart. per transaction). And we will still be taking all of 'em.

That's a change in policy because when I worked for Office Max we didn't accept Canon or Epsone, or basically any cartridge that didn't have a printhead. HP ink tanks were about the only exception. All we were giving was a ream of recycled OM paper.

Wow, just another person making claims without any knowledge. First of all, most of the cartridges get sent back to the manufacturer. We get credit from the manufacturer itself. Hence, the ability to give out the $3 coupons. As far as the change in cartridges, it's due to the abuse of cheap cartridges like was mentioned before. Frequently, we'll have people try to bring in 150 or so cartridges and to be frank, it's a bitch to write out that many coupons. Then, we'll hear the bitching about how they can only use 3 coupons PER DAY. As far as most of the Staples brand cartridges are concerned, the are not just refilled cartridges. They are cartridges actually developed and made via staples. The SIMPLY brand for example, is actually the staples brand cartridge that has yet to be certified with the name staples on it.

So before you go around spreading rumors, please get the facts straight.

You'd get 6 $3 off coupons, however, you can only use 3 coupons per DAY.

Staples has an R & D, Q/C and manufaturing division to produce ink carts ?

Doesn't seem that way according to this article:

"InkCycle also refurbishes inkjet and laser toner cartridges for Cannon, Dell and Lexmark. Ashley declined to discuss InkCycle's relationship with those companies or the names of his ink suppliers.

A representative for Staples said the company has more than 100 in-house brands of ink toner or fax-compatible cartridges but was not sure how many of those products came from InkCycle. Last month, Staples announced a deal to offer remanufactured ink cartridges compatible with Dell products under Staples' "simply" brand."

My Staples in NJ today denied Canon Empties, they showed me the weeky flyer that says HP, Dell and I forget the 3rd Mfr

At least in NJ 9/10 was the date the cart restrictions started
