If you find a cashier who knows just enough not to call a supervisor or manager but not enough to "read the fine print", you should be able to "convince" him/her into giving it to you at the $70 price. What am I talking about, you might ask? Well, I was a bit "greedy", if not too honest--here's how it went down:
I went over to my local Staples during my lunch break; they had one drive left (note--it wasn't bundled with the card). I picked it up, then asked the cashier if they pricematched their own website. She wasn't sure, so she asked someone else; this guy went over to one of their online terminals, pulled up the link with the deal (I had to point it out to him), then printed the page out and told me to show it to the cashier. The cashier didn't know how to handle the pricematch transaction so she asked another cashier to do it for her. Now...this is where I got greedy/honest--I really didn't need the card but figured "hey, if it's included in the deal, why not grab one?" So I grabbed one...the other cashier then rang up the drive ($129.99), applied the $30 discount for online pricematch, then entered the coupon code for the additional $30. Now here is where I lost the deal--since the card wasn't bundled with the drive, he had to scan it separately--of course, by doing this, the card rang up as $49.95. I pointed out that the card was supposed to be free; he didn't know how to discount it so he asked the assistant manager how to proceed. He then took a look at the website printout and noticed that the SKU number for the drive/card package was different from the individual SKUs for the drive and card, then told me that since the offer was for that particular SKU, he couldn't ring it up based on scanning two separate items (disk and card). Of course, when he punched in the SKU for the drive/card combo to see if it was in stock...no surprise that it came up OOS.
Moral of my story? If I hadn't gotten "greedy" and picked up the card, the cashier wouldn't have called the assistant manager over since he had already rang up the drive and applied both $30 discounts. The "honest" part is that in all fairness, the assistant manager was technically correct since the special offer had a specific SKU number...so I didn't really have much of an argument if I had pressed the matter really hard. Oh well...sorry for the long post.
