yeah sprint also has nice plans if you're a retailer of their phones (IE working in the wireless dept at bestbuy), I don't remember the specs, but it was alot for $15 a month. There's alot of hidden benefits if you work for a retailer, most manufacturers have employee purchase programs, you just need to contact them.

Maybe this is sigh that Nextel is finally starting to get serious about competing with the other wireless providers (with lower pricescoming for all ) instead being sort of an on the sidelines provider just for businesses .

Anybody know a cool Nextel rep that would hook an Anandtech brother up with this plan?

Does a person have to get the deal through the Nextel rep or is there a primary Nextel number that someone can call to subscribe?

Would any Staples employees be kind enough to let me use their employee number (or whatever ID Staples gives you) so I can get in on this?

$15/month = 750 anytime minutes + 750 night/weekend minutes OR free long distance.
Free Wireless Web (only detracts from minutes).
Free voice mail, all that other stuff...

damn i would get in on this deal but theres no way to get Nextell around here.. we only have Verizon and Cell One.. yeah vermont is GHETTO...

bubbadu - i've got the same exact problem you do up there!
I got to school up there, and there is nothing but cingular, us cellular, and verizon and in most spots verizon is ANALOG.
Nextel will be there in Sept 2002 (check out nextelpartners dot com)
Im stuck on a expensive ATT plan so i dont get charged roaming when i'm home in Boston.
Anyone know if retail stores (ugh..staples) have att employee plans?
I get r@ped with roaming charges anytime I'm off the east coast!

I would love to get in on this deal. Does anyone know what is required to get in on this? What I mean is, can a Staples employee sign their friends/family up for this deal? Would a Staples employee ID number be sufficient? Is there a special phone number you can call to get in on this deal? I would love some more details.

edit: also, how long would this deal be good for? if you stopped working at Staples would you have to change to a "regular" plan? If not, it might be worth applying for a job at staples just to get in on this, and then quitting after I get my phone.

Sorry guys.
This is really only for retail imployees.
The steps to activate a "nextel national retail plan" are:
1 You MUST be a national retail sales employee that is responsible for selling nextel products and services
2.Complete and sign a nextel subscriber agreement and include your employee number on the form under "Retail Agent information", "store name"
3. Obtain your store managers approval.
4. Purchase your nextel handset through your stores policy
5. Have store manager process your credit application and activation. You should be able to answer any credit related questions.
6. One comp of completed agreement stays at your retail store, one copy goes to your store's nextel representative and one copy must be sent to Nextel Headquarters.
7. Should your employment at the Nextel Authroized Retain store end, you must contact Nextel Customer Care @ 800-639-6111 to convert to a new rate plan.

What would happen if you were to "forget" to contact nextel to change your rate plan?

i suppose i can sacrifice one or two evenings per week for few hours.
but i'm not sure if the cause is great enough for me to go through that much pain.

I wonder if Staples would be willing to hire me to work less than 10 hours per week. I think I could handle one 8 hour day on saturday or sunday, in addition to my normal work work week.
