I just figured as staples PM is mentioned in a lot of these posts then this would be the right place for it. If you have a place where you think this thread would have more effect please DO tell. I unfortunately am leaving staples soon. But I am friends with people still working there who I will still talk to, and I will ask them about staples' policies

Click here and print it out. You could have your friend e-mail the District Manager(ask a MOD *manger on duty* for the addie, say you want to compliment the store) of your region then the manager on duty will get a nice little complaint on file and will get yelled at by the DM. And staples HAS to PM as you could just order online from home and that store LOSES a sale. Just print out the page and/or e-mail the DM.

I noticed that page too, but if you checked out the whole Clie thread (which I participated to), Staples managers would simply disregard the policies even when presented with a printout of the page! When I tried my own PMs a couple weeks back, but not from an online store, but still a store outside of my state, they gave me that "sorry, it's outside a 50 mile radius." This makes me think that maybe they have updated their policies or something because 5 other staples managers (in 5 diff stores) gave me the same reason for denying PM.

So basically, you are saying that I should be able to PM to anywhere by virtue of what is printed on the Staples homepage?

on the same page is a link to this though:

<<
Do Staples stores follow the same policy?
No. Staples store and catalog price protection policies differ. Please see store or catalog for details
>>

I wish they did have a printed policy... just so I know what to expect. It is a pain walking in there and getting a different answer everytime.

I have found this thread very informative, although technically it doesn't belong in Hot Deals.

I'd suggest if it gets locked to put a link in the first post and continue it in Off-Topic.

The worst excess at my local Staples is proudly displaying a compact fluorescent light for $14.95 that can be bought at Wal-Mart for $4.92. (Speaking of fluorescent lights, my local OD has their Epilogue 13w desk lamp - VERY nice MSRP $59.95/clearance price $29.92 on BLOW-OUT for $5.)

I still like Staples. Their service is first rate and their management generally better than the other similar stores.

I like to still be able to use a coupon in conjunction with a "sale" or even "clearance" item at Staples even if the PM+Coupon may go the way of the dinosaur.

i have gotten all kinds of excuses....but its true, they're cracking down hard on policy now.....

but remember, if it is a special item and its going to be shipped directly from Ingrum or other special order places, they CANNOT add overnight shipping cause it will take staples at least a week to order...isnt that right mr. staples guy? i did this with the plextor 16/10/40....since its shipping from ingrum to staples then from staples to me, they manager said they had no right to charge me overnight....seems fair

i also have 6 or 7 staples stores within 20 minutes of each other.....so its not unheard of...

<< slackerx, just a word of caution. i would recommend that you remove any distinguishing information about yourself from anandtech--no references to personal webpages, remove ICQ UINs, use forwarding email addresses like ****@mail.com and have it redirect to your personal email, and also remove your address location. it is well known the story of the guy who got fired from officemax for talking about deals at OM, and i would hate for that to happen to you (if you really do work for staples). >>

I was going to warn you also.. but I guess since you are leaving anyway, you don't have too much to worry about.

The deal for RandyE in the second post loses me on why they wouldn't pricematch. Although Staples has the wrong model number on the rebate form (here) it appears to be the same. Am I missing sumpin?

I live in nyc in queens but I go out to the city sometimes...

zip code 10002

0.8 769 Broadway Manhattan NY 646-654-6660
0.8 48-92 Broadway New York NY 212-219-1299
1.1 5-9 Union Square West New York NY 212-929-6323
1.4 345 Park Avenue South @ 26th St New York NY 212-683-3267
1.4 We Do PC Upgrades! 217 Broadway (Vesey Street) New York NY 212-346-9624
1.4 200 Water Street New York NY 212-785-9521
1.5 699 6th Avenue New York NY 212-675-5698
1.8 16 East 34th Street New York NY 212-683-8009
2.1 One Penn Plaza 250 West 34th Street New York NY 212-629-3713
2.1 205 East 42nd St. New York NY 212-697-1591
2.2 41St. & 6th We Do PC Upgrades! 1065 Avenue of the Americas NWC Manhattan NY 212-997-4446

That's alot of stores!

As for local stores and PM'ing policies is concerned...I just went to a Staples in Queens today and PM'ed a Rio Volt (since they're oos if you call Staples.com using the IM number) using a printout from the Buy.com website. Staples price was $169.99, Buy.com price $145.95. Lucky me, they didn't tack on any shipping costs. Got a $5 item as well and used the $30 off $150. The girl at the registered asked me if I wanted to use the $15 off $100 that was on the same coupon as well and of course I said "sure why not". On the bad note, one of the managers went to the "back" for awhile with one of the reps and I guess they went online and looked up the price to verify my printout (that's something new!). They used to just take whatever printout or ad I bring in as long as it didn't look too ridiculous. So PM's can still be had but they're being more strict about it I guess.

Personally I think they will lose even more money without the pms. Their prices are insanely high. Even if its only a 15% markup they need to shop around where they get them from as any idiot can check Pricewatch/Shopper.com for two seconds and find MUCH lower prices.

So if they throw out the pms they will go from giving really good prices to not moving any inventory. At least from the readers here.

I have nineteen (19) stores within 6 miles radius in Manhattan... However 95% of the stores are are managed by d!ckheads now since they got screwed by the $10 off $10 fiasco last month. Its the Anandtech effect again.

Also, I think Staples corporate is extremely dumb not to harness the power of Anandtech members. Although we constitute a small cross section of the customer base, I think we bring quite alot of sales volume and revenue since we always buy high $$ items from them, and we spread the news around = free advertising. Also, a clear PM policy would protect their asses and increase customer satisfaction.

For Anandtechers in NYC, some nice stores are:
56 & Park (Managed by Mentally Challenged People)
51 & Lex (ditto)
8 St & Bway (Nice Manager Lady, easy on PMs if you're reasonable)
Vesey & Bway (Easy coupons and PMs, but watch out for the Korean Manager, he's real smart)
Union Sq (Too busy, couldnt be bothered to verify, they just take whatever you throw at them)

AVOID AT ALL COSTS:
Bway & Broome Chinatown (#@$%$#@ Manager and stupid College Kids, They Dont Know Jack)

Also... another explanation for these "FREE AFTER REBATE" stuff: Inventory cost for Staples is extremely high since they sell a lot of bulky stuff and need space for new items. If items don't sell, Staples will have to rent more storage space to put its new stock. So they mark down the stagnant items to increase its turnover of goods and reduce inventory costs. Rebates are usually paid by/shared with manufacturers so Staples does have something to pocket at the end of the day.

Coupons and PMs are some of the ways to induce sales turnover. They are giving credit to the customer instead of spending big bucks on Advertising.
