Staples sold me a returned router that was shelved as a new item

An honest method for getting rid of opened items. Sticking to their return policy so the rest of the customers don't have to pick up the slack. That'd be a start.
So the store should lose money just because you want to return item perfectly good items simply because you changed your mind about buying them?

If there's nothing wrong with the router, and it's covered under warranty, then I don't see the issue here.

Agreed. That's what I did when I bought an X800XL from Best Buy (new and shrink wrapped or so I thought) only to open it and find an old Radeon 9700 Pro inside instead. Happily they busted the guy for fraud. Sadly I moved to TX before it went to court.

I never left the parking lot with it. And they admitted that it was a returned item when I brought it back in pissed off as I was.

Option 1) Attach it to a brick via duct tape and return it via the front window of the store at midnight.

Option 2) If it's not a hassle, take it back for a "real" new one and be done with it.

Option 3) If it works fine, don't do anything... just route things or whatever you do with a router.

If a customer returns something, the first thing they're asked is, "Anything wrong with it?" "Was it opened?" If the customer said no to both questions, and you were the store owner, what would YOU do with it?

Check to see if it's been opened? I haven't purchased a single boxed item that wasn't sealed with someting in recent memory.

Didnt BestBuy get sued exactly for this... if an item is returned, it needs to be returned to the company or sold as an open item. Not as new.

Do what any other american would do, sue them. j/k that would take to much time.

I guess return it for a new one.

If Staples is like most stores, you would be wasting your time because they don't care.

Let it go.
