Staples sold me a returned router that was shelved as a new item

So I bought a router at Staples this morning that was on the shelf like it was a brand new item (with the security cables around it). When I brought it home I found that the seal on the plastic bag inside had been broken but I decided to set it up anyway. When I logged into the router to change the settings, I noticed that an apparent previous buyer's settings (including internet login information) were still in place. I upgraded the firmware anyway and restored the router to factory settings, so I'm not worried about whatever security settings the previous owner may have set, however I am wondering if I should complain to Staples about selling me a used item as new, as well as the obvious problems of leaving that type of information on an item.

I would have taken it back to Staples before changing the settings. At a minimum you should only pay what they would have sold it as on the "open box" table.

It's working fine and it is covered by a Netgear warranty...

Never been/worked to/at Wal-Mart have you? If I buy a router (or other hardware/item) if I return the item, stateing that I don't want it, and nothing is wrong with it, what do you think they do with it? I can give you a hint: they don't send it to claims.

I thought it was illegel to sell something as new when it had been sold already.
I would at leat go back and ask for discount.

An honest method for getting rid of opened items. Sticking to their return policy so the rest of the customers don't have to pick up the slack. That'd be a start.

i do not expect to purchase used equipment as new for one. I have no trouble purchasing a open box. I have done it at least 5 times with no trouble. But when i buy something NEW i expect to be the first person to be useing the item.

It's too bad you flashed it/removed settings. They aren't going to believe you if you go back and complain. You really need an option for "Do nothing and deal with NetGear if something happens'.

Sometimes people return things that are not broken. Maybe they changed their mind? Maybe they found a better deal, etc.

In any case I don tthink you should have paid "new" pricing for something used. Take it back.

Return it and complain to owner, I think it's wrong to sell returned items unless the item wasn't opened.

I bought a used router, but atleast I knew it was used. A lot of wireless routers get returned because the user is simply to stupid to set it up. There is probably nothing wrong with it but you shouldn't pay full price for it.
