Thank you Tanner for a hot deal! I'm new to the Forum and i must say AT has already saved me a bundle.

I had to go to Staples 5 times to get this deal to work out (I think I know almost all their employees), hehe... Well, in any case, I ended up getting 2, so if anyone wants the second one email me or check out the For Sale/ Trade forum, cuz I need some DDR RAM BAD!

Thank you again to all the AT ppl.

Tried to get this deal at one local Staples to no luck.

Funny thing is that I probably could have if I had pushed it. When I first presented the price match, the sale manager and tech salesman went to huddle out of sight and I heard the tech salesman say, "I'll take care of this." When that didn't work, he loudly paged the manager. The manager and tech salesman then piled lie upon lie on me ("We don't match places like Sam's," "We don't match out of state," "We can't match if its less than we paid for the drive," etc.), and each one I countered with the price match policy print-out. Each counter got a reply of "well, yes, but..." Insane thing is that they didn't even bother to call Sam's locally or in Illinois. They kept avoiding it (I guess in fear of having to match).

Finally, they said that they would match the Staples receipts, but only if they were originals. No photocopies allowed. At this point, I was already 20 minutes late into lunch and needed to get back. They totally blew off the Sam's Club receipts, which were what really counted!

I guess I'll try another location tonight.

One question..is this even worth complaining to Staples corporate about? I'm actually quite angry with them for the consistent stream of obvious lies. Would like to make them eat some crow. Still, don't want to ruin anything for anyone else.

Whadya think?

Well, as for complaining to Corporate, I don't think that's worth your time.

No doubt in my mind that Staples Corporate is WELL aware of this situation and regards those of us pushing this PM issue as a collective pain-in-the-a**. It sure sounds to me like they've given their store level managers carte blanche to blow off any inquiries.

It's been noted plenty of times in these forums that some outfits (read CompUSA) are worse than others for PMs, and Staples sure seems to be striving to be the new champeen.

I would think if you contact them all you'll get is a Sorry-you-had-a-problem response and still no drive: better to wait for the next deal and jump on board then.

I would generally agree that complaining to corporate will get you a big, fat nothing, BUT, there was that thread from the guy that got CrapUSA corporate to set his local manager straight. There were some extenuating circumstances, but still....
If it's worth your time, go for it. I did it with Worst Buy over the GF3Ti200 deal, and I've got nothing to show for all my time and effort

Well I am now 0 for 4 trying to get this deal in the Sacramento area. I did pick up the $30 rebate slip while I was at one of the stores today and have it on my site here.

Good luck everyone.

Went to staples and the sales rep called sams to verify price, sams tells him that the price has been raised to $79. So ride to sams to swipe price sticker from shelf. Go back to staples with sticker, and the manager wants to see sams card and will only sell us one of them. Then he goes and calls sams again and says he will not honor the price due to the fact that it is an open box item. HE WAS A REAL JERK FROM THE VERY BEGGINNING!

The staples in Carle Place NY by Laserland has at least one marked Smart Burn.
Another staples (freeport?) has the Mitsumi. I made some calls today but I decided last minute not to go for it.

called staples, had to go through 4 diff ppl to get to the manager. He gave me some bs about how they were actually different products, and had diff upc codes. Can someone help me out with a UPC # (won't work on rebate because it has to be the actual thing) from a sams club purchased drive? I have to get this pm, its pissing me off

I haven?t posted on this forum for a few years (I suck! ), but after this deal, I could not resist! Went down to local Staples and bought the drive with no hassle! The manager was very nice, and she didn?t even try to sway me out of it.

Original Price: $109.94
- 58.34 (Price Match discount)
+ 8.99 (CDR 10pk w/ cases)
- 8.99 (Free CDR discount w/ purchase of CDRW drive)
+ 2.58 Tax (5%)
--------------------
Total: 51.60
- 30.00 (Mail-In rebate)
--------------------
Total After MIR: 21.60 !!!

I love you AT members! For those that are curious, I used the Sams Club receipt along side a Staples one showing the deal going through THIS week. She looked over it, smiled, and rang it up. Cool, eh?

Just got in on this deal but I may have gotten it for free
heres how it went

Went to a Local (1) Staples where my brothers buddy is manager, Got in on last Drive in store for $49.54, unfortunalty is was a Mistumi, getback in car drive to other local (2) Staples(who orignally denied me on WED after calling Cali staples, manager informed him my printed reciept was fraudluent) No luck all out of stock. Next (3) Staples (AVE N and Coney Island Ave) was a mess lookedlike they only had about 5 people in there. Waited at CS for about 10 mins, when a CS told me to return it @ register and come back and repurchase the new one. Ok but here is where is gets interesting she credited my CC the FULL price $109 +tax and not the price match, so now i have a $119.01 credit on my card. So now I am +$69.47

Go in the back grab a Lite-on (NO Burn Proof Sticker they have 4 more) got back to same register re-PM my original reciept for $49.54

walk out door with big smile
for the layman

-49.54
+119.01
-49.54
= +69.47
+30 MIR
total +97.47

can this be right After MIR??

WOW, Staples CSR strikes again.
Congrats on your good fortune, though, I'd imagine if they catch it on some sort of internal audit, they might try to adjust the balance.
Prolly won't notice though.

"unfortunalty is was a Mistumi"
MITSUMI is a GREAT drive. i got three of these lite-ons and would trade them in a heartbeat for the reliability of the mitsumi...

Sunny Botch!

There wasn't any info posted yet that all on-line orders were damn Mitsumis. No Staples B&M around here, so I ordered on-line. Now I have a sh!t Mitsumi to return.

Went to three different stores in Columbia,SC and the first store mgr was a total jerk, however the next two stores was very cooperative. I pm'd three and got all three for 56.91 each with 10.00 off 30.00 coupon. the final cost for each was 46.91 and they had the 30.00 rebate form in the store and they gave them to me ----no problem, the final cost is $16.91 each. the last store had two more, I think I'll go back tomorrow and see if I can get them also....hoooooraay

Worked for me too...sure wasn't easy though. For anybody else looking to do this deal on Long Island, NY, good luck, you'll need it. Seems like all of the store managers have been trained to interpret the reference to "Any store" in their PM policy to mean "Any New York store".

The only store I could find that had the Lite-Ons was in Port Jefferson, all other stores were either out or had the Mitsumis. The only store I could convince on the PM was Farmingdale (with a fight), and then I exchanged it at Port Jefferson for the Lite-On.

I don't know if this is well-known, but there is a software workaround for SD2 (using CloneCD and a program called BetaBlocker). It's relatively simple to use and works with the Mitsumi drive. Might be worth keeping the Mitsumi for the faster RW and bigger buffer.

Just heard about this tonight, so I trundled over to the Staples, PM stuff in one hand and began the checkout process. No problem said the clerk in the technology section. No problem said the checkout clerk at Customer service. Grabbed my copy of the $30 off coupon and then the call to whatever her name was to "get an OK" for the PM...she begins saying that this came from Idaho, and I was in there yesterday and blah blah blah and I have an identical receipt like this and risk management was here and our general manager doesn't have authority to authorize this. I must be coming down with a cold because all I said was no, that wasn't me, I just got this tonight.

So after the crowd gathered round I finally asked if they were going to allow it and she said no she could not and that was the end of this evening's sojourn. Thanks but I think I'll wait for the 2G M/L technology introducing in the 2nd quarter and these drives will come screeching down then, too. It was pretty funny hearing all the stories about this PM, though. I didn't even react when she said I had been to a number of stores earlier and yesterday....again, I told her I just found out about this tonight (which is true).

Someone's been acting-out in my city, I think. Oh well....
