That is really odd that your FPS is bad. Have you tried setting up a user.cfg file in the Public folder? I did it for the PTU and it helped me a good bit. My settings:
r_AntialiasingMode = 1
r_VSync = 1
ai_NavigationSystemMT = 1
e_ParticlesThread = 1
e_StatObjMergeUseThread = 1
gfx_loadtimethread = 1
p_num_threads = 1
sys_job_system_enable = 0
sys_main_CPU = 0
sys_physics_CPU = 1
sys_streaming_CPU = 2
So....I have not been following much, just hoping that someday SC will become something.
How is it coming along? Is there anything to do solo? How's flying with KB+M?
2.0 is a frustrating enigma for me.
That sucks, Rivet. I assume you've deleted USER folder and the usual stuff.
I've been pretty fortunate. The most annoying bug I've run across in Port Olisar is that sometimes the ship selection interface won't interact. Also, I took off in my Connie and it smashed to pieces on some invisible object. As I was floating down, another Connie in front of me strafed up and got smashed up, too.
I get lots of Code 7s and 0s though trying to get in during busy periods.
Honestly the CPU shouldn't be an issue, and the GPU is made of the same stuff. You should be fine.So I'm starting to wonder if 2.0 just pushes my hardware too far. Tonight I finally talked my son into firing up SC (he's been too consumed with Rainbow Six Siege to bother).
For the past hour, I've watch him smoothly access Port Olisar, fly a Gladius, destroy all the pirates at a comm array, EVA to it and flip the switch, destroy more pirates dumb enough to mess with him, fly to Cry Astro, get repaired, fly to Karesh, find no one there to FPS with, fly to Covalex, explore and find voice coms, fly back to Port Olisar and exit to hangar.
No freezes, very few fps drops, no crashes to desktop. He's so excited. I'm jealous. He was running on high settings using a i7, 8 gb of ram and a GPU that's equivalent to the 7950 (can't remember what Radeon is calling it).
So same RAM as me, a GPU one generation better, and a CPU much better than my AMD 620 Propus.
But still.....I had a much better experience on PTU 2.0g (never got around to trying h-k) than I'm having now.
No worries though....I'm planning on upgrading my system this spring.
Edit: and I have to mention....watching him for an hour.....those explosions are amazing. He was wearing his headset so I couldn't hear anything, but he kept saying how amazing everything sounded when stuff exploded!
AMD 620
I mean purely in a crashing regard. It shouldn't crash just because an older CPU.
I know it sucks, but have you done a full reinstall, clean?
I managed to get back in the Connie and take her to CryAstro for some TLC. Tough ship.

There's a lot of netcode requirements currently and the main thread doesn't multicore very well, so if the CPU is too busy with other calculations and too much network activity is missed, it can crash.
For the record, I only crashed once when I played Saturday at the end of about 40 minutes and none at all the night before. I recorded my session Saturday because crazy stuff comes out of nowhere sometimes; posted below. I was coming out of a comm array back to my Connie and a Gladius comes out of nowhere, slams the Connie into a spin, then blows up against the comm array. I managed to get back in the Connie and take her to CryAstro for some TLC. Tough ship.

Yeah, I enjoyed watching that. Especially when he went out to look at that port engine all on fire. I can imagine he was thinking....."yeah, sh*t, that's bad. that's gonna cost me some credits......"
Solo you can:
1) Access your hangar and walk around any ships you own....which really lets you see the level of detail they've added to the ships.
2) Access a sim pod within your hangar which lets you enter Arena Commander in which you can play the tutorial teaching you the basics of flight and combat, free fly to practice those, vanduul storm to battle increasingly difficult waves of AI, and racing on three different tracks
3) You can also access a wonkavator that will take you to Arc Corp a city/planet that you can explore. This is multi-player but there is no interaction with others if you don't want there to be.
4) And finally you can access Port Olisar and attempt various missions in a very large system. This is multi-player as well - while you can do the missions solo, you'll likely encounter others who may or may not be friendly.
In short, there's lots to do solo. Flying with a KB + M is the most common input method in the verse. It's fine, doable, but not nearly as immersive as a stick or throttle.
I this game works like some games today: if you want to get something or something special right away you have to pay real cash for it otherwise you have to work for it?
I upgraded from a similar 7850 1GB to a GTX970 a couple of weeks ago and the difference is MASSIVE.
I have an i5 3470 though, I'm not sure how that would go without replacing your mobo\CPU.
