Selling an "I Win" anything is a great way to unbalance a game and ensure its still birth.

Except as has been said before, these aren't a "I Win". The game is skill based. Just because you have a ship doesn't mean you know how to fly it.

Flying a 12x class-3 Realiator isn't going to be a solo pwn machine, it will take a highly skilled crew. Imagine losing just the guns alone without insurance...

That isn't a bad business deal actually. They said that it costs upwards of $100,000 to design a ship in house. Now for $30,000 + the time to setup the contest and judge it they hopefully get a ship design that it up to standards (or close enough that they can tweak it for cheap).

Update:

Hornet Variants pushed back to next week, substitute Aurora variants today. Supposedly...

The price of ships isn't a part of an "I win" factor since they all can be earned in the game. Based on what the devs have said about PvP you don't need to worry about a bunch Idris Corvettes hunting down your Aurora everywhere you go. It sounds like they're really placing a greater emphasis on PvE than PvP.

What you're seeing is really two kinds of people, those who expect great things from this game and want to support it, and those who don't want to grind credits to buy a high tier ship, and a mixture of both. I'm certain that the hours required to acquire expensive ships in game will be formidable, and instead many people would rather spend a few hours' wages to get them quickly. I kind of wish we had more solid specifications and general information regarding the ships, but most people don't seem to mind, they have plenty of time to get balance right.

Personally, I enjoy just progressing through the game and I'm not really interested in dropping $500 on something that won't materialize for quite some time, to each his own. That said, I'm not particularly concerned about feature creep. They over budget for every new addition, it doesn't cost one million dollars to produce a new ship, most of that money goes to funding other aspects of development. Things like the FPS portion of the game are easy to implement, when they licensed the CryEngine they got access to a lot of the work that Crytek has done for their Crysis FPS games.

Exactly as I have been saying all along. And they said the price of a ship is about $35,000-100,000 depending on the size and player viewable/accessible area.

Wow that Avenger looks badass. I'm fighting the urge to drop the $60 bucks.....I told myself I would'nt spend more than the original $35.:\

So have they picked up a publisher, or are they essentially self-publishing this game with the crowd-sourced funds?

I would assume $22m wouldn't be nearly enough to make this game without a major publisher stepping in to increase funding as well (?)

There is significant private funding IIRC (about 20 million) that came after the crowd-funding proved there was a demand, but TMK none of it came from a publisher, at least not for publishing purposes. RSI maintains complete control over the IP.

RSI maintains complete control over IP and CR has stated that they no longer need the private investors, and can go completely crowdfunded.

I'm unsure what to do with my pledge. I am in at the bounty hunter level (Origin 300). I'm mostly interested in solo piloting for the moment. Thinking about springing for the Freelancer. I mostly want to explore to start out with.

^^Same with me, I'm not too sure what I want to play, I used to like being a trader/merchant although exploring seems interesting too. I may up my pledge $10 to get the legionnaire.

I got my fishtank in hanger, that is all I wanted. The idea of having a fishtank in space makes me giggle.

Same here I I noticed this morning that every tier gave a new benefit.
Don't forget the special fish for the fish tank!

I'm thinking of melting down my Hornet towards a Constellation. But it's a lot of dough...

Same. I'm going to wait to see how the dogfight alpha pans out...I love exploring (it's the only thing I liked about the X series), and I love dogfighting (FS1 + FS2), so how fun the fighting is will likely determine which route I go.

Also interested in money-making mechanics as an explorer, I remember reading about the first player to reach a particular new system gets naming rights (or something similar), so I've also got that to deal with (will everything already be explored/claimed if I go the dogfight route first).

Decisions, decisions.

How do ship upgrade purchases work?

I have the Aurora LX. The LN fascinates me, yet I'm not so sure I want to spring for a "separate" Aurora LN, but I don't want to get rid of my LX (though arguably the LN appears to be a better ship) when I could just buy a different class of ship all together.

You buy the upgrade and it will replace your existing ship. So buying the $10 upgrade will replace your Aurora with the LN model.

I was comparing the specs and I'm a bit concerned that the LX lists "RSI Jump Engine" whereas the LN does not. Does this mean the LN is not inter-system capable? But none of the other Aurora variants list that either, so I'm confused.
