The price of ships isn't a part of an "I win" factor since they all can be earned in the game. Based on what the devs have said about PvP you don't need to worry about a bunch Idris Corvettes hunting down your Aurora everywhere you go. It sounds like they're really placing a greater emphasis on PvE than PvP.
What you're seeing is really two kinds of people, those who expect great things from this game and want to support it, and those who don't want to grind credits to buy a high tier ship, and a mixture of both. I'm certain that the hours required to acquire expensive ships in game will be formidable, and instead many people would rather spend a few hours' wages to get them quickly. I kind of wish we had more solid specifications and general information regarding the ships, but most people don't seem to mind, they have plenty of time to get balance right.
Personally, I enjoy just progressing through the game and I'm not really interested in dropping $500 on something that won't materialize for quite some time, to each his own. That said, I'm not particularly concerned about feature creep. They over budget for every new addition, it doesn't cost one million dollars to produce a new ship, most of that money goes to funding other aspects of development. Things like the FPS portion of the game are easy to implement, when they licensed the CryEngine they got access to a lot of the work that Crytek has done for their Crysis FPS games.
