Wouldn't a Starfarer be better for cargo transport? More cargo capacity, more dedicated for the role.

I'm seeing 900 freight units on the Starfarer vs 3200 for the Caterpillar on the ship specs.

It looks like the Starfarer is intended for fuel transport, with massive storage tanks. So I wonder if that 900 includes tank storage(?) If not, it may be a good multipurpose rig to make some cash doing dual-duty as a hauler / refueler.

It also appears the Caterpillar is modular, allowing you to use one of the cargo hulls as a human transport module.

It will be interesting to see how lucrative the various jobs are. It sounds like there's going to be a lot of ways to gain income.....even transporting sensitive information in that cool looking little Herald ship.

Is anyone aware of a multiplayer free-flight mode that isn't combat or race oriented?

I know it sounds boring, but I just want to fly around and look at other people's ships (and try not to crash into them). The more flyable ships released, the more interesting this would be (at least to me).

Yeah, its built in there. Think it's called Free Flight or Free Roam under game modes. I use it to practice flight-assist off flying.

That's not multi-player though is it? I remember working out my keybinds in that mode, and don't think you'd see other players. It's just a personal instance.

I've seen Free Flight. But I don't think it's multi-player. You're by yourself flying around Broken Moon or Dying Star maps. That's where I've been practicing my shitty flight skills. But I'd like to do it in a MP environment so I can see what other ships look like while flying.

Currently the only way to do what you want is via one of the combat modes. Perhaps you could get a group of folks together in a private game and agree to not use weapons. There might already be folks on the RSI forums doing this to practice flight mechanics so you might want to check there as well.

Thanks. I forgot that you can know fly around with friends.

Chris Roberts mentioned that the ships will look more worn down over time as they are used. Is there a way to restore a ship to "brand-new" exterior? I can see the manufacturer offering a restoration job that resets the asthetics of your ship for a hefty fee. It would be a good money sink.

Along these lines, there could also be "tuning packages" where the weapons, shields, engines, etc. can have their attributes increased slightly. It makes more sense for this to be a temporary measure so players can spend a little extra to make sure their ship operates at 105% for that next major battle or raid.

I don't know about tuning packages, but there is a semi-crafting mechanic in the game called Overclocking (or tuning). It's exactly what it sounds like. You can spend the time and effort to attempt to get some Oomph out of your components. Whether it's an engine, a gun, etc. Each of the different manufactures will have different thresholds and it'll even very between 2 identical components.
There was mention of that being one of the ways to make a living so to speak. If your insanely good at it (mini-game? not a lot of details on it yet) you could overclock parts and put them back on the market. Or people would seek you out.

I'm hoping that there will be some level of "test driving" from the ship manufacturers.

Some of these ships look like they're going to cost a fortune, so it would be nice to try before you buy.

Really digging the Origin 315p at this point. I replaced the nose-mount tractor beam with a 3rd Orinsky laser cannon for dogfighting, but this ship is as far as I'm going to go before the game is released. I think it's going to be a great ship to start out with......it's fast, handles really well, has a jump drive / jump scanner, decent combat ability, and still has a good freight unit capability for such a small ship.

Can't wait to try out some other ships, though. 2 years is a long wait....really wish he would release a "test fly" module for released ships.

Back in November (?) they had a week were any backer could test drive every single flyable ship (at that time) for free. You didn't even need an AC pass. But this was before AC 1.0 which now has better HUDs and flight characteristics.

But I'm confident we'll get more chances.

Edit: Just remembered that when the Mustangs were released I was able to test drive one of those as well.

Hey, what should I buy TODAY to be able to play... something?

...and what exactly IS available today?

...and is the "free" ship for an AMD R9 video card relatively valuable at all? Tempting to grab a $300 Radeon and the value of the ship kinda' "justifies" it a little more.

...or just stick to my current R9-270 and buy a ship+game package.

Would love to hear your advice!

There already will be "tuning". Go to the "Performance Tuning" section of this post from March of 2013 additional game information:

The free ship sells for about $18 on the grey-ish market. Thing is, the gold codes that come with them also include two other games. Let's say you take ciV and alien. Those are both what? $60? So that's a total of $138.

Watch the code though. I think they're going to stop the promotion soon and the codes expire in April I think.

Well, available to fly right now are:

All Aurora variants (ES, LX, MR, CL, LN)
All Mustang variants (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Omega)
All Origin 300 variants (300I, 315P, 325A, 350R)
All Hornet variants (F7C, F7C-S, F7C-R, F7C-M (I guess technically F7A isn't since you can't own it right now))
M50 interceptor
Cutlass Black

Someone set up a Google Doc that is keeping track:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/tnx5w5EwJw23lPYhHdlHs5g/htmlview

As for grabbing the AMD card to get the game for "free" with a ship, that really is up to you. Personally, I'm not upgrading my video card until the actual next gen chips are out using a new process node.

I don't want to sell the ship - I'm considering BUYING one, mostly to gain access to some sort of playable game here-and-now. The $20 package sold out some time ago... cheapest pack is $35US.

...maybe I should forget the whole thing and just get Freespace 2 and use the Freespace Open mod to make it run on Win7 in 1080P

I figured I was going to buy the game anyway, so I just spent the cash up front.

I don't feel bad at all, as I've already spent more hours playing the modules and having fun than I have a lot of other fully completed games I've spent this much on.

When the FPS module releases, I'll be all over that, too.

I meant you could've bought it for $18.
Turns out with the release of the mustangs price went up because they saw the pricing of the rest of the series.

My advice:

I would not buy any hardware today just for a free SC ship.

If you want to play today I would buy the cheapest package you can.

Buy the Aurora MR ($35) for plain vanilla.
Buy the Aurora LN ($45) for a little more bang for you buck
Buy the Mustang Alpha ($45) for a speedier approach to entry level ship

Then buy the AC pass ($5) to dogfight.

You might not even need the AC pass. I don't have one and for some reason I can still fly my Aurora LN around in AC. Your mileage may vary.

I would NOT spend any more than $50 on SC. Here's why:

1) We still don't know what the final game will look and act like. Or even if it ever will be released. Outlook certainly looks good, but there are still a ton of unknowns.
2) The fun of SC will be earning bigger/better things in game. So instead of paying real money, start at the bottom and earn your way up. That IS the game.

Just one man's opinion here......

But...but...I spent like $250+ on this game! :'( (I also spent $150 on Elite)

Seriously though, if you're just looking to try it out, buy the cheapest package to get in; still cheaper than the final price of the game and you'll get in on the Betas. I put much more than I needed because (*rich snob voice) I'm a patron of the arts space sim genre.

I absolutely respect that. And I appreciate it too (as it benefits me).

When you're flying around in your Connie on Day 1 of the PU....I will be envious (a bit) but I just hope you ignore little old me in my tiny, unimportant Aurora and move on to bigger targets.

Either that, or if the Vanduul jump my ass, I hope you fly in and help me out!
