I'm really tempted to get in on this early vs in a year or two; is there any benefit other than assisting in development, vs waiting for the retail release?

You get to play with the modules now/as they come out.

The Dogfight Module (Arena Commander) is quite fun as is :awe:

Price is slated to go up as development continues. Also the final release may not come with a starter ship out of the gate, you might have to run missions in a loaner to earn your own vessel. Backing earlier my also earn you in-game items via stretch goals or random handouts (current backers received a hangar decoration last week) but nothing game breaking.

This sure looks like an interesting game. I haven't looked at every detail, where would be a good place to start without spending a lot of cash? Some of those packages are pretty expensive, I assume they are pledges towards the game development?

Unless you really want to back the game, I'd start cheapest option. See my post above.

I pledged more during the original KS campaign because I love the Space Sim genre and had the disposable cash, you definitely don't have to.

Is there any singleplayer-esque gameplay yet or is it basically all MP combat? I'm gonna suck at dogfighting...do not have the time to get good at any games right now.

I've only done the SP; it's a "Horde"-esque SP (i.e. it's a gauntlet) that's basically a showcase/testing of the Kythera AI system where you fight waves of increasingly difficult Vanduul waves. I think it's a blast.

There's also the SP explore/free roam where you're able to just fly around the map (same 2 maps as the AI maps).

Then there's the racing (haven't touched) and the MP dogfights (haven't touched).

And if I'm not wrong, I think they introduced MP co-op against the AI gauntlets, which I also haven't touched.

This is pretty much all I play atm. Fun gunnin' around with buddies. The first part of the single-player campaign will be out sometime this year but I wouldn't bank on it before summer and the First Person module should be out sometime before then.

Like SLU Aequitas said, start with the cheapest package+AC pass and go from there. You can always upgrade/buy more later if you want more ship and even if you don't like it atm you may change your mind as more features get released/updated.

So for $30, you can get an Aurora MR with:
SelfLand Hangar
Starting Money: 1,000 UEC
2 Month Insurance
Digital Star Citizen Manual
Squadron 42 Digital Download
Star Citizen Digital Download

For $35, you get the above with an Aurora ES plus:
Beta Access
3 Month Insurance

For $45, you get the above with an Aurora MR plus:
Arena Commander Pass

So unless I am reading this wrong-- if you don't get a $35+ package, you don't have beta access when it's released? Do you still get the full game when it's complete, or will you have to buy it again?

If you look back one page of this thread, I lay it all out for someone there:

$30 gets you the games (single player: Squadron 42 and mp: Star Citizen), a ship (Aurora), some money, and a hangar.

If you want Beta access, then you need to spend $5 more (Aurora ES I believe).
If you want dogfighting now, then $5 more for an AC pass.

So $40 for beta access and fighting today. Or $30 if you just want in today but don't care about beta and dogfighting.

And to add to above: Aurora is an all-purpose vehicle. If you want to pew-pew, then spend the $50 on the Mustang. But if you're more interested in commerce or don't know what the hell you want to do until things go live.....Aurora would be a good choice.

I think I'm confused with the progression of packages. No AC and no beta means you can't do anything until the game is released? AC but no beta means you have AC, but nothing else until the game is released? AC and beta means you have everything as it is released in alpha/beta?

I'm thinking the ES + AC would be the way to go, or get the $45 package and get an Aurora MR instead of an ES. I'm not sure what the differences are between the two ships, though.

Correct. If you ONLY spend $30 today, you won't get any beta access...you'll need to wait for the game to go live to enjoy. You will not have to buy it again.

AC just gives you access to the dogfighting module. The base module right now is the hangar module....you can walk around your hangar, explore it, get in your ship, explore it, etc.

$30 allows you to do that today. The entire game is in pre-alpha stage. We've a long way to go.

As I understand it, Beta is when they start piecing these modules together (hangar module, FPS module, AC module (dogfighting), Planetside module (commerce?), etc.

If you don't have the beta access, you'll be stuck in the hangar until the game goes live.

Thanks.

Maybe once my VCP is done...sigh. Really do not need a major distraction right now.

I might be wrong, even though the "current specs" say otherwise, but I believe the main difference between the ES and the MR is that the MR comes with guns and the ES doesn't.

And has been already stated the Star Citizen Digital download is the full version of the Multi-player free-roam game. The Squadron 42 Digital download is the full version of the Single-player campaign mission game. As long as the package says it comes with those you are set and do not have to purchase anything at launch.

It's a little confusing. The picture of the ES doesn't show any weapons, but the specs say "9-Series Longsword (1)"

which is this: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/voyager-direct/KBA-Swords/9-Series-Longsword

Has anybody here tried voice commands yet? After watching a few videos, it seems like a choice method of controlling ship functions - - especially during the heat of a dogfight.

orly.

Thanks man. I'll probably buy the package with beta/etc once I'm caught up with real life shit, but I shall keep this in mind!

Better stay away till you get that VCP. Pretty high demand around here for that...and some very good salaries.
