I'm excited for the genre's return, but considering they still need outside investing what in the world do you need that much money to make a game for?

i'm not sure, but i think hiring 50+ people for two years is expensive? i could be wrong though...

No, you're right. Experienced technical employees usually run at 100K+/year after you factor in benefits.

Agree with CycoDude, most of their costs are going to be in the form of staffing. They're licensing CryENGINE 3 and that runs about 1.2 million of their budget. Figure in another 2 million to 3 million for hardware to develop the game on and the servers that they'll need for the alpha and beta testing of the Star Citizen multiplayer portion of the game and that's eaten into a good portion of the crowdsourcing funding. Yes I do remember that they stated they could do it with 2 million in crowdsourcing but even then they were going to still get outside investing. I'm really looking forward to seeing this game develop and I've already put in some addons to my original pledge.

hmm if you look at it like that, 50 people at $5M a year is something like $50/hour if you consider roughly 260 work days in a year with everyone going for 8 hour days.

All of the sudden it looks like a bargain

you got me all excited only to find out about 2014.

Then I searched X3 again and it looks liek there was a new release (Albion Prelude) in 2011. Off I go.

FTL was released and successful after its kickstarter. I have it, and it is pretty good. I don't have that much hope for the other projects I backed, but I hope they are fun if and when they are released.

FLT was a huge success. I think Cthulhu Saves the World was another successful game.

X3:AP is really good. Steam shows that I put 398 hours into it in the three months I played it because it was so addicting.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just discovered this game.
I have to say as a PC gamer I really enjoy that intro to the video.

Some quotes from the video:
"I'm picking PC over consoles because PC was what I always used to do in the past, but more importantly it's because PC is an open platform, PC is always constantly innovating...I really care about the PC and I really want to push the PC limit, I think it's a great game platform. I'm really actually quite sad and angry about the situation right now where it sort of feels like...you know...PC games and PC gamers don't get any respect. It's the medium that is the coolest and the most powerful and that's really why I'm focused on PC."
....
"So one of the things that I like about crowd funding is cutting out the politics and the noise of the big publisher and dealing directly with the people that want to experience the game that you're making."

More guys like this one, please.

Edit: He has raised about 7,5 million now.

I need to forget about this game for a while because the more I think of it the more impatient I get!

Yes, I am really looking forward to this.

So much in fact, that I am thinking of getting back onto EVE, just to get some fix for my space itch..

Strike Commander, a more rarely mentioned Chris Roberts game:

"The Strike Commander project has taken more than four years and over a million man hours on background development. Very little of this production time turned out to be actually usable in the final product, as at least one and possibly several complete project "reboots" were required to refine the graphical engine to a playable state."

Ranked by CGW as the 13th top vaporware title in gaming history back in 1996.

Good luck....

I remember getting this game when it first came out. It was pretty bad ass at the time. Didn't realize that there was animosity about that title.

Obviously your not experienced with software development. You can't deliver perfectly every time. I will judge this project on its own merits and not something that happened almost 20 years ago.

the main problem with strike commander was the ahead-of-it's time engine

they're using cryengine 3 for this. no real engine concerns...

How cute. You thread crapping again. Chris Roberts must have had sex with your mother by the way you hate the guy.

Anyone get their card in the mail yet? I got an email a week or so ago reminding me to update my profile but I still haven't got it. They were suppose to go out by Christmas so this doesn't make a good first impression on how the rest of the game will go.

I got the email as well along with the ability to upgrade your card. I don't remember reading anything about the cards going out at or around Christmas. Either way I'm not getting antsy about small trivial items. The game is the prize.

it's funny how people want to knock cryengine (not you personally, just an observation), but when it comes to a game this ambitious, everyone is basically relieved it's on cryengine.

The last round of emails was to finalize shipping details and the name to be printed on the cards. AFAIK they're still being produced and haven't been shipped yet.

What are the “Citizen Cards”?
Citizen Cards are physical props to prove that you have supported Star Citizen and will be one of the first pilots in space when the testing process starts. They will be wallet sized cards that you can carry with you anywhere you go. Citizen cards will also appear in the game itself, showing your character’s social standing, credit account and so on. We’re hoping to make them available to backers by Christmas 2012, so you can gift the game to friends and have something to show for it!
