Agreed I don't think they've mentioned it being a MMORPG game. To my knowledge its been advertised as a massive space battles game with trading and exploration. I don't see this game being an MMORPG. I don't even think its going to be about your character.

Srsly. I don't understand why MMORPG fans are filling this thread with BS arguments that have nothing to do with this game.

Back on topic: Speaking of trading, has any information been release on how it's going to work?

Trading, afaik, generally drives the economy, in that items for sale are built using raw materials delivered by players. more than that, I haven't heard about any specific mechanics.

I believe there were a few earlier videos on it. From my memory, there are NPC owned/operated factories and stations. They will have buy orders for items they need and items they sell. Prices fluctuated based on the demand of that station/factory. Both players and NPCs will be fullfilling orders. There is the possibility of player owned factories/stations as well which will operate in a similar manor, but I believe the owner has flexibility to set the prices they want on the goods (not certain yet).

The factories will essentially create most things in the game from my understanding (think EVE). Ships need to be constructed at the ship yards, components such as engines, electronics, armor, shields, weapons will need to be sent to the ship yards. Raw materials will need to be sent to factories to make the armor and shields, etc...

I need to find the 10 for the Chairman that it was in, but there was a blurb about the UEE outsourcing facility/outpost supply runs to private entities, players.

So there's that.

Many reps would be in order if you posted it. It would help get this thread back on track, away from the mmorpg weirdos.

I might be getting it confused with some lore I read. It was from Terra Gazzette:

After a tumultuous battle in the Senate, Article 416 passed. Derisively called the Hemorrhage Act by the opposition, A416 called for a line-by-line assessment of current operating fund allocations by a group of Senate subcommittees to see where cuts could be made.

SSA was one of the hardest hit divisions as the Senate subcommittee decided it was more cost effective to outsource hauling needs to private contractors rather than own and maintain an internal structure.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/...patch/13627-Terra-Gazette-An-Uncertain-Future

So I'm reading into this perhaps too much or the setting is being set for players to be carrying out these hauling missings and supply runs. That's just my take on why lore like this gets created.

No.

A role playing game is a game that lets you take on the role of a character, make decisions, gain experience points, gain loot, and develop THE CHARACTER. This can be done while sitting around a table or while running around the woods or a college campus, not just with a computer.

A game without XP or skill system is not an RPG. Star Citizen is a persistent world space battle simulator. The only element it has in common with RPGs is it has money and gear. That doesn't make it an RPG.

You do take on the role of a character in this game and that character is persistent, though it apparently will be possible for permadeath. Role playing doesnt require XP or a skill system.

Really SC is many games rolled into one. Which is one of the things that makes it so awesome.

That doesn't make it am RPG, and the SC team has stated multiple times this is a skill based game, NOT one dependent on leveling up. Heck, by your definition, every COD is a RPG.

An RPG doent require "leveling up". Role playing is playing a role. Damn near every game could technically be called a role playing game. But role playing by common gaming standards revolves around having a character that is persistent with mechanics that are persistent, it doesnt reset after you turn the game off. Id also say a common trait of role playing games is customization be it gear for your character or in SC gear for your character and ships.

COD does have role playing elements now. And you "level up" in it now too. Other shooters have melded RPG mechanics as well, BF and PS2 being 2 examples. Trying to pretend like gaming genres haven't been blended together is silly.

SC is a flight sim, fps and rpg.

RPGs do not simply consist of "playing a role". They generally require character growth and progression through game mechanics. For reference, BG & BG2 are RPGs, COD is a FPS. SC is a space sim with a FPS sub game.

To add onto that, it's the character's progression and said progression's effect on the avatar's salient skills that affects the outcome of various scenarios rather than the controlling player's skills, which goes directly against SC's gameplay mechanics.

And you will grow and progress in SC. I dont think you know what exactly is going to be in SC.

What is this weird thing people have with wanting SC to not be an RPG? No matter how much you dont want it to be SC will and does have RPG elements. And as I said before SC is many games in one. Its not just an rpg. Its not just a flight sim. I dont understand why this is such a problem for people.

RPG doesnt equal dragons and wizard hats. RPG equals persist character role playing which SC has.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. We have different definition of what a role playing game is.

Your character will progress in SC, just because its not the way you progress in WoW doesnt mean its not progression.

I think the correct answer is "who gives a shit"

Because no one else has posted it:

PAX East Twitch Stream Recording (1:06) [Spoiler Alert: crowd can't handle their liquor]

Cuts to gameplay (and less dbaggery):

Thanks for posting those. I'll admit I haven't really been following the updates closely because I didn't want to be disappointed with anything as it developed. But honestly, I'm encouraged - it really does seem to be shaping up to be taking the bones of what Chris Roberts does best (Wing Commander simulations with a lot of little immersion bits). I'm waiting for the story telling and the "game play" elements to make a final call on whether the project as a whole is worth it. But my opinion is that he's generated enough capital that there should be continual growth on the title, even after release, and players shouldn't be disappointed.

I'm just hoping that initial expectations are tempered, but the lofty goals are met at the same time given there's no external pressure from large stakeholder publishers and whatnot.

Between this and Shroud of the Avatar, I'm in happy land. Actually, there's even more with the new Star Control, plus a bunch of actually wanted remakes like Gauntlet and GalCiv4 which aren't fiddling too much with what works plus the new "Alpha Centauri" successor announcement. It's almost like a gaming renaissance for us old-timers.

That article doesn't cite anything other than the May 5th update I linked above. I also disagree with the title, since I don't remember them giving a set date for this month in the first place.

They didn't give a release date. The only thing they had previously stated about a real new date was after PAX East depending on how smoothly things were going. To be honest, I don't mind the delay as we still keep getting quite a lot of updates in terms of what is happening in the development of the game (more so than any other game I can think of). I personally prefer a lot of the release it when its ready and not early mentality. They do not have a publisher screaming in their ears that the game has to make a specific date (yes, it still behooves them to hit a few general time frames as there are definitely cyclical seasons that games are most often purchased during), as I think the first impressions of the game need to come close to meeting the expectations that so many have, and I think that Chris understands this as well.

I paid $450 on eBay for a F7C-M 'Super Hornet' w/ LTI (Gifted). It was worth it because I now have access to ALPHA (w/o paying every time) and BETA.

LTI is nice considering it comes stand with a jump drive.

I want to get the Saitek X-55 but I will see what people think of it a month or 2 into ALPHA.

I also want to keep an eye out for SC branded products.

Is this a pay-to-win game?

I haven't had time to research this game much, but what I have done has really intrigued me. I've never played a multiplayer game and this may have very well been the first.

But if people can pay $450 for a super awesome ship that will easily crush my $40 ship.....what's the purpose of even playing MP?
