Bullshit!

That's what Chris says......

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14839-Letter-From-The-Chairman

For the lazy:

"You all know that already; you’ve lived that. You’ve seen Star Citizen evolve and start to come together. You’ve watched our atoms form molecules, our modules form a real, playable game (that you can boot up and play today!). There are people out there who are going to tell you that this is all a BAD THING. That it’s ‘feature creep’ and we should make a smaller, less impressive game for the sake of having it out more quickly or in order to meet artificial deadlines. Now I’ll answer those claims in one word: Bullshit!

Star Citizen matters BECAUSE it is big, because it is a bold dream. It is something everyone else is scared to try. You didn’t back Star Citizen because you want what you’ve seen before. You’re here and reading this because we are willing to go big, to do the things that terrify publishers. You’ve trusted us with your money so we can build a game, not line our pockets. And we sure as hell didn’t run this campaign so we could put that money in the bank, guarantee ourselves a profit and turn out some flimsy replica of a game I’ve made before. You went all in supporting us and we’ve gone all in making the game. Is Star Citizen today a bigger goal than I imagined in 2012? Absolutely. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not: it’s the whole damn point."

The last 24 hours have seen a flood of information from CIG....between this letter and the associated 1.5 hour long "10 for the Chairman"....lots of interesting information.

I'm excited about SQ42.

Yeah a lot of the hate is just naivete about the gaming industry and uninformed backers who don't pay attention IMO. I hear complaints about Star Citizen every day that were literally addressed a year ago, but people are chirping their little hearts out like it's breaking news.

There's a nice chart floating around:

That chart is way off. Should be changed to October 2011. Chis Roberts announced Star Citizen in October 2012 and said it was in production 12 months at that point.

Not really, it was a proof of concept and the project's entire scope was changed as a result of the kickstarter.

Major publishers have 100's of developers ready to launch on day 1. Let's see the headcount according to CR from 2011 til today.

Hmmm 5.... yes that is FIVE programmers at the end of 2012. So yes... I'm sure some initial development happened during that time. *rolls eyes*

"Our internal headcount has gone from five at the end of 2012 to 59 at the end of 2013 to 183 at the end of 2014 and to 255 now."

I can't imagine how much time it takes to model / texture / light / animate something like that. Granted a bunch of it is modular.

**Threadcrap Removed.**

Feel free to discuss the actual game, but spamming the thread with nonsense is not acceptable. This is not OT.

Thank you.

I'm glad he has the right mentality. I've backed SC and I own E, so I compare them a lot myself. I like E, it has a lot of polish and it's fun especially since Power Play came out and changed up the missions. However, it feels quite shallow. You can tell just by playing that they have much larger ideas that are coming, but to release it as retail in its current state is a bit of a mistake, IMO. No planetary landings, though they look beautiful. No walking around the ships, though they're planned and the cockpits are beautifully modeled. No walking around stations, etc.

I'm glad CR is sticking to his guns and piecing the game together as a whole than release it half finished and put the rest in as time goes on like FD is doing. Do it right the first time!

For the record, I do really like Elite. But, mostly for what I know it will become and not so much for what you can do now.

Good one!

As for Star Citizen: I'm not a backer, and therefore don't know what exactly was originally promised. But, theoretically, if the devs promised X features by Y date, and have failed to deliver, I can see why people would be angry. I don't know if that has actually happened, however.

The main date promised was in the kickstart campaign before the change to go without capital investors that were going to put in something like 10-30million (initially 2015 or so release date in kickstarter). The changes all happened in the first 6 months or so, with notifications that it would take longer due to not having as much money up-front, but would also allow for more control of the development to release the game when it was actually done and not push something out that needs massive patches to work right out of the box (just look at about every other AAA game, recent Batman pulled from PC, latest Assassin's Creed, etc., etc., etc., which were obviously released simply because that was the date for their release).

I'm in to SC financially more than I really care to admit, but I'm not displeased at all with where the game is at. There's no reason they can't achieve their total goals over the next couple years. They're up front, open, and communicate often.

Me too, I've spent more than my usual $50 max purchase however I am not concerned with the development pace. I am more concerned that I may suck or simply not enjoy it but that is what being a PC Gamer is about....risk

Totally agree, sunk in a good chunk of cash, still get excited with each update. I'm glad they're open with us and I'm glad they've been focusing on building the foundation of the game first.

Yeah, way more than my limit too, which is about the same $50. I usually get all my games on steep discount on Steam. I paid full price for Elite and I have enough faith in CR to make a great product I'm willing to go all in. ~$400 Space flight sim is my favorite genre, and I've been wanting a Wing Commander-esque game for a long time.

Less than I spent on my lifetime subscription to ST:O back when it launched... :whiste:

Ok. This may be a stupid question, but why does Gamescon matter so much?

I caught up on a few CIG videos and articles this week (Chris Robert's "Game Commander", AtV, etc.). All the current updates seem focused around preparing for Gamescom. I remember they kind of got like this just prior to Pax East too.

But why? Why are these gaming conventions seemingly a focal point for SC development?

Played the game finally (on a friend's account.) He had a fighter of some kind, and the Aurora (he was an early backer.)

A couple reactions: Gameplay with a mouse...not that good. Locked vs unlocked is interesting though. The main gun on the fighter was the only gun worth anything. The wing guns (which he had gimballed) were totally worthless.

SLI...well, 2x670s at 1080p did *awful*. Walking through the hanger was barely playable with a lot of stuttering (but it would hit up to 80FPS too...)

I'd consider this game, I think.

It can drive sales and interest in the game for future development. It's also a high profile way to show off what they have in the works.

Events like these are the only marketing events CIG does outside of the website. Gamescom(Euro) and Pax East(US) are the two gaming events where CIG shows off major updates to the public at large. I don't know that they are a core focus of development schedule but the spacing between the events lets them show off something at one and with the possibility of releasing it at the other.
