I'd wager once the basics are in place they could knock out a full star system with 12 moons and a 100 missions in about a week.
You mean a "CIG week" (equal to about 10-20 months in normal space-time continuum).

Yep, I was one of the original backers, well aware of the timeframe and that we’re still years away. Not seeing the issue.
There is no issue. I was just agreeing with your assessment that it is primarily a patience thing. No need to get defensive about it.

Holy crap! That's a long time and you still have at least one more year and quite possibly three or more to go.
I believe we have a very long time to go. Three years or more is not out of the question. If you liked my last picture perhaps you will like this one as well.
Does anyone else still have their card?

I really just wish they would have added a little more content to the PU that we have now. Just a few more missions or something. I've gone through all the PU missions a dozen times so I'm bored with it. I couldn't play much AC since I had shoulder surgery so the only thing I really play now is Star Marine, which I really enjoy warts and all.

Once it gets released to Concierge I might have to get it installed. I've largely ignored the game updates since it's not anywhere near completion (and still isn't). But 3.0 seems to have some meat to it.

I don't think three years is an unreasonable guess. The typical problem with such lead times is that the graphics and game play tend to become seriously dated, so by the time everything is finished, the first work is no longer worthy of being released. But from what I've seen lately, I think the graphics could stand up three years from now.

Love what I'm seeing so far. Focusing on completely fleshing out one system makes sense. Considering everything you can do, there is many games worth of content potential in a single system.

the missions are pretty buggy atm, and most people are just having a blast exploring simply because of the visual candy.

That said, some of the missions I've tried can take an hour or so, and if they just dropped everything and focused on missions right now, they'd have a 50 hour game in no time.

I want to start by saying I prefer playing online and that 'offline' mode feels rather empty without other players, but for the sake of experimenting and bug hunting without network crashes, I decided to try the offline mode and see how far I could get.

I managed to get almost 12 hours into a single session. Granted, the last 7 hours were my ship attempting to coast from Yela to Daymar on an empty tank, fact is the game client didn't crash once.

Here's a clip from an earlier part of the session where I was doing cargo runs with a freelancer.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/205697570

Here's a 7 hour clip of my dead ship floating in space (just to prove the client stayed up).

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/205743957

Anywho.. my point here is that there's a remarkably stable game hidden behind the netcode issues. Obviously it's not feature complete, but my patched up version of Far Cry 4 crashes far more often than SC did for me last night. I had a few hiccups and stutters in Levksi, but everywhere else it was a smooth framerate.

PS.. interesting note about the 7 hour trip to daymar.. I ran out of fuel during a slight turn, so my ship's inertia had it slowly, slowly spinning in a circle while it's main trajectory didn't change. This resulted in the ship doing a few 360's over the 7 hour trip. (Which at 650ms only got the ship halfway between yela and daymar).

So at least some of the game play IS already fleshed out. Would you guys say that two to three years is still reasonable? Solely from your descriptions, I'm thinking Early Access status maybe in less than a year.

There is more gameplay available today than let's say last year. I'd be guessing if I say when it will be "complete" or if that day will ever happen. This could end up being a constant development game but regardless there is some stuff to do. Pick it up and join our AT Guild, again there really isn't enough game play to do any guild stuff and your PC needs to be never than my 2009 machine (game does run on my Q9650 better than before). This does come with some warnings
Do not complain if you hate it because it's early access
There is a chance it may never be complete or what you expect
Don't buy it with sacred money
Starter packages seem fine to start with

Again I don't have a lot of playtime in game so take other feedback over mine. I do really enjoy starting the game up every now and then and seeing what has changed

To add what Fanatical Meat already told you, my opinion is that the game may never be "officially" finished. Instead we'll perpetually have this early access we have right now and CIG will continue to iterate and add features and content. Until...............the money runs out. At that point the game will be "finished".

What 3.0 adds a lot of is backend systems. The behind the scenes stuff that allows a lot of other things to work. If you get frustrated easily by buggy things, you may wait until 3.1. The next four patches are supposed to be released on a calendar basis (i.e whatever is ready as of 3/31/18 gets released, whatever is ready as of 6/30/18 gets released, etc.). These four patches should be more about content and mechanics than backend stuff, so should be much more exciting. We are supposed to be given a roadmap by the end of the year that will tell us what they're going to try to put into each of those four patches (and beyond).

If you don't have a package, now is a good time to grab one (they're on sale for $10 less than normal). Grab a referral code from the stickied threads here in AT PC games and create an account first. Doing so will get you 5,000 UEC (in-game money) that could be useful when you start out (note that right now UEC is not in the game but there is a currency called alpha-UEC that we're all given to test out).

Thanks for the input guys. I don’t do early access as a rule, I just found it interesting that there seems to be more gameplay in place than I supposed. Although you both seem to be more pessimistic than before, so I suppose it’s my faulty perception of discernible progress.

Have you checked any of the PTU 3.0 gameplay? It's bare bones for testing, but it makes it clear they're balls deep into something amazing. Approaching and managing a planetary landing is pretty breathtaking.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but there is something a bit off with those space-to-surface transitions (based on a couple of videos/trailers I have seen). The distance seems quite short, making the planets appear smaller than they (probably) actually are. But I suppose they can't fully simulate everything.
