Star Citizen is another DX12 win for AMD

Chris Roberts of "Wing Commander" and "Star Citizen" fame talks about DX12 and Vulkan support for Star Citizen.

https://youtu.be/XD9_L5o4mhQ?t=608

The interesting part is just after 10 minutes.

I fail to see how this translates to a win for AMD. I watched the whole video yesterday and that's not what I got out of it.

They said they're working with AMD because it's important to them and would be to Nvidia too. CR has already said he won't put any brand preference on the game and will put equal efforts into optimizations for both camps.

That's what you got out of it? I'm just gonna go check and see if you posted this information yesterday, that will let me know if what you're saying is true. brb.

(back) You watched the video and commented on another part of it but didn't even mention this part about dx12 or AMD? Where did Roberts say that equal efforts were being made for both camps? It seems obvious to me that AMD is the preferred status partner here.

Where did Roberts say that equal efforts were being made for both camps?

It was in an interview with him during the original Kickstarter. It's buried in the mountain of them he did around that time. Various users on Reddit and the RSI forums reference it from time to time.

FTR, I did mention the DX12 info in other places:

And how is it obvious? AMD has reached out to them to offer support and did a cross-advertising deal to skin a Mustang in AMD garb while Star Citizen was given some publicity on their site. CR has said that if Nvidia reaches out to him he will accept anything they offer and he will make sure the title runs well on both vendors' hardware. He isn't a brand fanboy like you seem to be, reading so much into wording. He wants the game to be playable by all.

It's a win for gamers.

DX12 isn't just a win for AMD, sure, it helps them due to native multi-thread rendering and lower API overhead (which NV already has to some extent on DX11). But the features in DX12 help all hardware.

Overall, DX12 levels the playing field because it removes the major weakness of AMD in DX11, single-thread rendering and lack of direct hardware access & scheduler which GCN is designed around (for consoles & console-like API).

When you talk about winning in DX12, you have to be specific and talk about the features.

The optional features like Async Compute could help AMD if it were used extensively. Likewise, FL12_1 could help NV if they were used extensively.

So its game-dependent. I haven't heard anything about SC using Async Compute heavily for it to be a win for AMD. If anything, the game will run great on NV as well due to working with NV.

I don't know about heavily, or if it's even asynchronous, but CR did mention using compute for things like voxelized asteroids.

Everything DX12 is a win for AMD and one step closer to putting Nvidia out of business. Wood screws can't do async compute, amirite or amirite?

What he said was he would be happy to accept optimized code that didn't adversely effect the overall performance of the game or another vendor's hardware. If you look at the SOP for nVidia optimizations, this is a huge win for both gamers and AMD.

No excessive tessellation just because it hurts AMD more than it hurts nVidia, but hurts the performance for both. No black box libraries that the dev is bound to NDA's and lacking optimization abilities for other brands.

You kidding me? Did you try tighten them a bit? I gave the left one a quarter clockwise turn and instantly gained 20FPS on all my benchmarks!

Why not just place it under your wheel in the driveway? You have to walk by at least one wheel on the way to the car anyway. This way you get to run it over every day.

At this point this "game" has so much hype that unless it destroys everyone's PC Crysis 1-style it will be a letdown. It should be a win for AMD and Nvidia when people have to buy much more powerful GPUs in the future to play it.

Then I'd have to see my shame every day.
