Surprised I haven't seen a thread about this game.

I am a huge Star Ocean fan. SO2 is one of my top 10 games of all time. The newest entry in the series is a strong prologue addressing the beginning of the human trek (haha pun pun) into space. I bought it yesterday and put about 8 hours into it, and while it has its flaws, Star Ocean fans will get the chance to fall in love all over again. SO3's weakness was its "WE'RE IN A MMO!" ending, however SO4 seems to get back to the series' roots in that respect.

In my opinion it's definitely in the Top 5 RPGs on the 360.

I know of the series, but never played any of the games. I recently saw a commercial for this one, definately looks to be at least worth a rental.

The game was release in 2004, it's ok to talk about the ending.

My favorite features so far are the crafting (as always for Star Ocean) and getting to see the history of the Star Ocean series get laid out. The battle system is phenomenal.

My dislikes thus far are:
1. The voice acting.
2. The voice acting.
and
3. The voice acting.

Yes, it is that bad. Such a shame to have such terrible voice acting telling such a wonderful story.

Do you need to have played the previous Star Ocean games to be able to pick this oe up with ease?

I haven't played any of the others but from what I've read, the new one is a prequel.

I'm about to play it now but it's a shame about the voice acting. If it weren't for the Japanese option in Eternal Sonata, I'd doubt I would have gone as far into the game as I did.

With a title like this, I honestly don't understand how they can drop the ball so badly on the voice acting. =/

God, why did they have to cut so much stuff out and not port over the Japanese voice acting?

WHY?

Have you actually PLAYED any of the 360/PS3 Square-Enix RPG's?

I'm completely convinced they got bought by EA without anyone looking, all of their current titles are utter disasters. There isn't a single RPG for current consoles outside of Tales of Vesperia that I don't regret buying.

The Final Fantasy game better fucking fix this or I'm done paying S-E money, and I'm pretty sure I've purchased every single RPG they've released in the US since they were just Square, and Enix!

Have they made anything besides Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery? I mean, both of those titles seem pretty lame, but I expected more from SO4 as it is a long running series.

I'd probably enjoy it more if they left in all the stuff they cut out and include Japanese voices...

Hmm... I refuse to play jrpgs without original voices. I might have to get a japanese region xbox some day, or hope for region hacking to come out soon without having to dump the core, hex edit and reupload.

It's like watching Star Trek: Enterprise without having seen the original series or the next generation. It makes sense within the storyline, and you can pick it up without playing the other games, but to really enjoy the subtleties of the story you have to have played the other games. That way you know where the decisions the characters make eventually lead.

So far, the story is almost a carbon copy of the Star Trek: Enterprise Xindi storyline for those that have seen the show. Still enjoying it however, and Bacchus is my favorite character.

I prefer the Japanese voices as well. I just don't get why jrpgs seem to have such shitty English voice acting all the time. When I play any other type of game, I typically find the voices to be pretty solid. It's like whenever they need to do voice work for jrpgs they bring in the bum squad and let them screw it all up.

You're missing out on at least 1 great game, Tales of Vesperia.

The English voice overs are actually decent, but the game itself is really good.

ToV has the best voice acting of any JRPG that forced me to listen to their English dub, but still a few voices really irked me.

QFT.

Playing through Enchanted Arms and Lost Odyssey right now. Both have options for Japanese audio tracks. I heard the English VOs for Enchanted Arms are terrible, but I don't use them so it's fine for me

You have to try the English VO for Enchanted Arms. The gay sidekick at the beginning is hilarious....in a bad way.

I'm just wondering. Is there going to be a PS3 port? I've read in some sources there are no plans, but others say there is development going on.

The voice acting scares me.. I play mostly for the story, and I can't stand bad voice overs. Kills games completely for me.

Star Ocean is sick, so glad I got it on Gamefly this week....the hours are piling up fast. The cut-scenes are painfully long sometimes, but also add to the immersion eventually IMO.

If you ever planned on playing it, then it's better that you know now than when it comes up the in story because it's so ridiculous that it almost made me quit playing it. It's all like "OH MAN, the plot is getting really thick and juicy, the shit is about to hit the fan and I can't wait to see how it turns out... " then it's all like "Oh.. it doesn't matter because you're just characters in a game and we're just trying to reset it all" and it's completely anti-climatic. It's like... "I just ran back and forth through this world of creatures trying to eat me alive and now you want me to save this crap world?"

It's like going downstairs on Christmas day as a kid to find all sorts of presents that Santa left, only to have a note sitting on top that says "Santa isn't real, love Mom & Dad".
