So who did the movie producers kill off in this one?

George Kirk that is.

Movie was great. I watched a lot of Trek when I was younger, but gave up around 10 years ago... didn't watch much of the last couple seasons of Voyager, tried Enterprise but really only watched the first season of that, and never saw Nemesis. But I loved this. My wife loved it too.. she'd seen some TNG and a couple other things but wasn't really familiar with the original series at all.

(yes, the science was pretty much all terrible, but that's true of more or less every episode and movie of Star Trek ever.)

even back in the day they didn't believe the science...and one was not supposed too. It's sci-fi/comedy/drama

Sad part is as a science major many that contest much of what is said in movies really have no freaking clue either. I like to hash things out with these types when they don't have a search engine available to them.

Kirk is in charge of the Enterprise sooner. Bet we can set a record anyway on how fast they go through Enterprises...

I'll give it a 7.5 out of ten.

Good action flick. Good nostalgia references to The Original Series.

Points off for numerous plot holes already mentioned. Major points off for pissing on 40 years of TV/movie history. Yeah, the alternate timeline excuse is just that - an excuse. They should have just used the same timeline, and created different characters. No need to rewrite the whole timeline.

They could have used one little sentence in the movie to explain why the mining ship was able to destroy MANY military vessels. That really bothered me. Even a 130 year difference in technology doesn't explain why a mining ship had torpedoes and shields capable of shrugging off Starfleet's best.

Starfleet didn't get photon torpedoes until after the Klingons (or was it Romulans) fired some at Kirk's Enterprise.

Let's face it, if Kirk were really in charge, he'd just do a timewarp and save Romulus before it blew up, changing the timeline back to the way it was.

Second best line in the movie (paraphrased):
Kirk: I'm giving the Romulans a chance to give up, maybe it'll help us make peace with the Romulan Empire. I thought you'd like that?
Spock: No, not this time.

Hated it. They should have just made a sci fi space movie and did whatever they wanted with it. If you are going to do an existing franchise sure go ahead and action it up a bit but at least get someone who was a fan of the source material.

I think these holly wood interviews go something like this:
Studio: "We're making a new star trek movie and you did good work on that tv show that wasn't very good sci fi but everyone loves, want to do it?"
Producer: "I love star wars!"
Studio: "Star trek"
Producer: "Yup, star wars, I got just the thing for the light saber battle"

Im surprised how scared everyone is about this topic too. "Well It wasn't cannon, BUT I REALLY LIKED IT"

who cares if somebody on the internet thinks you are a nerd for wanting your sci fi to make sense and have a plot that is actually worth talking about???

spoiler?:

And thanks for keeping the ship around at the black hole long enough to get sucked in. I wouldn't have been happy unless I heard scottys catch phrase to make the collection complete.

Next time go your own route or stick to the source. I think abrams and crew would do a fine movie on their own without having to depend on the franchise name.

If the Romulans had suffered a similar fate as the Vulcans, Kirk really needn't make such a gesture.

Won't watch it again.

I didn't care about the characters at all, they didn't have any...depth? Having seen the original series and gotten to know the characters, I can only imagine how random it would be to people who never watched the old show. I mean, most of the comedy was referencing the original series, so what's left for those who haven't seen it?

THIS MOVIE IS GODLY!
I really like their core philosophy. To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life and new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before.
Break the rules, break the conventional wisdom, have a perpetual curiosity of the unknown.
And most importantly, have a big pair of nads.

That you can use a particle transporter to send someone from a planet onto that ship

But I am NOT willing to believe that:
A mining vessel of any kind will look like the one in that movie.
That said mining vessel will have an interior that looks like some fantasy land H. R. Giger version of a space ship.
That a super nova could threaten the galaxy or even destroy a planet in an adjacent system.
That Spock could watch the destruction of Vulcan for a near by planet, even one in the same system as Vulcan. If Mars blew up today the only thing I would notice is one less red dot in the sky tonight.

I think all these little illogical events add up till your mind says 'whatever'

I was just in awe of the beauty of the mining vessel. It just screams ne plus techno alien. We have enough alien creatures on our planet, I can surely believe that another alien creature could produce that, especially that with a non-carbon base.

The artistic value of the set is just majestically epic.

Oh and if mars blew up, you'd see a HUGE FUCKING LIGHT ABOUT THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE SUN.

I didn't understand Dave's first interpretation, but Arthur's I found very interesting. I also liked Dave's later comments there.

I didn't care for the plot, but the production values, effects and yes even the acting far surpassed the original.

The plot device was simply to establish the known crew of the original series, but also provide Abrams with the flexibility to alter the established cannon...no easy feat, but I don't think the way they weaved it together worked.

The attack on the Kelvin, and the change of fate life direction for Kirk worked...they made his character a mix of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo rolled into one.

Unfortunately, the Nero character wasn't particularly compelling. <spoilers> So Romulus is destroyed in the future, Nero blames Spock, and the anti-matter black hole creating red matter thing conveniently sends Nero's fate to intersect with the birth of Kirk, and then future Spock arrives conveniently as the crew of the Enterprise is set...didn't work for me, especially when they maroon Kirk on the very planet Spock is marooned on, where Scotty just happens to be hanging out.

I guess if you buy into the whole FATE thing, then maybe the plot works.

However, I think the actors all did a great job, and the look and feel of the movie was amazing...took a Star Wars geek to make a good Star Trek film...I am looking forward to where they take it from here.
