But I am NOT willing to believe that:
A mining vessel of any kind will look like the one in that movie.
That said mining vessel will have an interior that looks like some fantasy land H. R. Giger version of a space ship.
That a super nova could threaten the galaxy or even destroy a planet in an adjacent system.
That Spock could watch the destruction of Vulcan for a near by planet, even one in the same system as Vulcan. If Mars blew up today the only thing I would notice is one less red dot in the sky tonight.

I think all these little illogical events add up till your mind says 'whatever'

That's exactly what I thought too, I mean I'm willing to let them fudge a bit, but there was just waaaaay too much of it going on. Oh and since when do Romulans look like space vampires?

Speak for yourself. I felt it to be predictable cornball that detracted from the movie.

Being a long time Trekkie, I really enjoyed it.

There was enough newness to the movie to make it fresh and interesting, but the writers threw us enough bones to appease the old timers. A lot of the classic series lines -- Scotty's "I'm givna 'er all she's got, Captain", McCoy's "I'm a doctor, not a physicist", and the death of a red shirt.. all made me feel comfortable in this new Star Trek universe.

I'm sure, up in the Nexus, Gene Roddenberry has a big smile on his face.

I always though Romulans and Vulcans looked the same. Why did they look different in this movie?

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! LOVED IT!!!!!

That was GREAT! I thought the kid who played Kirk was going to do a terrible job based on the commercials, but he did a really good job!

I think I'm going to see it again next week in theaters! Super fun! A+!

They're almost indistinguishable because they were originally the same species, in every other Star Trek ever they do look the same (except for their costumes, of course). I guess Abrams wanted to make them really creepy and edgy, or something, I really have no idea though.

OK, entertaining movie but I could have done without the big hands humor and Scotty's goofy sidekick. Funniest part was Scotty beaming them into the middle of the bad guy's bridge.

One question for ya'll though - why was the Nimoy Spock sitting in a cave waiting for young Kirk to show up instead of going to the Federation Outpost and trying to stop the destruction of Vulcan? I must be off on my timeline of the movie or something but I thought he was "stranded" there so he could witness the destruction of his planet? So couldn't he jog over to the outpost, hop a shuttle, and try to do something?

Thoughts:

Liked:
Design of new enterprise
Overall feeling of the movie
All the cast except Uhura
Special effects
Music

Disliked:
Uhura (except her body), she felt forced into the story
Plot holes, specifically things that were brought up then dropped (slugs into pike, etc)
Real Spock's denture voice
Plot was convoluted, but most origin stories plots are

Surprised:
Spock/Uhura
Kirk's parents
Vulcan going boom
The movies have now created two alternate universes, First Contact made the mirror universe, now this movie made another.

Did they change the tagline "To go where no one has gone before" rather than "To go where no man has gone before" ? That's what everyone in my group thought but I couldn't be sure.

If that's case, boo to them, especially after the movie made allthe female crew wear skirts and boots

They used "where no one has gone before". Change of the times I guess. 30 years from now it'll be....

"To go where no straight, gay, transsexual, transgender, Caucasian, Hispanic, African American, Asian, Native American, Conservative, Liberal, Protestant, Catholic, Democrat, Republican, differently-abled, person, pet, spouse, or significant other has gone before."

I believe ST:TNG also used the same opening in the later seasons as well.

I really enjoyed this movie.

Though some things really did annoy me. Where did Spock get the wood for the fire? Why couldn't the enterprise shoot the mining laser itself? Why did the missiles hit the enterprise but afterwards Sulu still mentions that the shield is still at 30%.

Overall, I thought the ride was incredible and hope they make a sequel soon.

Preferably with more space battles. I thought the space battles were too few, I was expecting a really epic battle, but they just warped into a graveyard without the pretty explosions.

This is something I never got. Why didnt star wars ships take physical damage even though shield were technically still up. And someone should instal some circuit breakers on those damn cockpit arrays so they dont explode into peoples faces

The whole hierarchy was messed up. When the fleet was called to Vulcan a bunch of cadets hopped on the bridge of the Enterprise, supposedly the best ship in the fleet, with the only senior commander being Pike. Uhhh... where did all the normal officers go? You know, the 30-40 year-olds that have been with Starfleet for a while? Shouldn't they be on the bridge instead?

And the whole Scotty getting beamed into the water tubes was funny initially, but dragged on and felt too slapstick.

1. No idea about the wood.
2. If the Enterprise opened fire on the mining laser, Nero's ship would have opened fire on them, destroying everyone. I think. Or maybe not.
3. Old school shields allowed physical damage to the ship. Basically it lowered the amount of damage absorbed by the hull, but never completely eliminated it.

He looked more like the guys from the beginning of Nemesis where they find the second/prototype Data.

How did the shield work then? I always thought it was some kind of electronic/magnetic field that was able to repel whatever was being hurled at the the ship
