I installed the mod about a month ago and spent a lot of time playing since. The mod works with SOSE: Rebellion only. Installation is pretty straight forward, navigate to the Ironclad games folder, drop the it in the mod folder within that one and you are done.

It's not a finished project yet, it's very actively worked on but it's more than playable at the moment. Right now here are 4 factions to choose from (Federation, Klingon, Romulan and Borg) but the devs are working on the Cardassian and a Bajoran faction as well and adding stuff to the existing ones too.

As a long time RTS Star Trek fan, I jumped this as soon as I heard about it and it's working great. Beware of multiplayer atm, factions have not been balanced yet but playing against AI, especially the lengthy games has been epic. The mod would be even better if it weren't for some inherent SOSE flaws, game feels slow in the finishing stages.

Epic battles! I played against multiple opponents on the "vicious" setting on huge maps, it took me 30 hours to finish the last one I played, including one 6 hour straight session where time flew by. The factions balance is true to Star Trek canon. I played on bigger custom maps( they all have a STA prefix) and I even waged a huge battle at Wolf 359. A single Borg cube can and will wipe you out unless you allocate a serious portion of your fleet (that you hopefully already built when you encounter them) to defend and even if you get to pop one (which was extremely satisfying) it will set you back and you will lick your wounds and recovery takes a while. Tactical cubes are a notch harder than assimilation cubes and yet there are even more powerful Borg vessels in the mod. Staying true to canon in regards of factions balance makes it hard to balance the multiplayer. Borg units are extremely powerful so they are very expensive and that makes anyone playing as Borg vulnerable to early invasions.

The visuals and audio are good but as expected from a community mod, there is some repetitious subpar voice acting when moving a large fleet of ships from one planet to another. Definitely recommend the mod, I only encountered 1 bug but it's potentially game breaking, it was a corrupted save so create several saves if you play longer missions.

Yeah I saw this on moddb. It's pretty cool. I used to be a huge Armada and Armada II player back in the day (before I lost my Armada II disc ). However, Sins already has a Star Trek mod, Sacrifice of Angels, that's pretty fully-featured at this point and even uses a lot of ship models introduced by the Armada games and voice and sound files from the Armada games. I guess the Armada III mod is nice for people who want a gameplay experience even more in line with the original Armada games, but I'll just stick with Sacrifice of Angels.

It's pretty meh to me. But not bad, not like we have a ton of good Star Trek games. I liked Sacrifice of Angels 2 for Sins a few years ago.

This is why I love AT. For some reason, I always thought that soa was a mod for Homeworld, thanks for clearing that up.

To make up for having to spread my fleet, I used my old tactics that worked in earlier Sins, defend planets that don't have a massive fleet covering them by building a star base within range of 6 repair stations and other defenses, a dozen hoshiko cruisers and I was set. Not any more, the Borg dropped in and started taking out repair structures one by one, what was once a sound defense tactic, this time around it only barely bought me enough time to bring my fleet back.

The Sacrifice of Angels 2 mod for SoaSE is supposed to be a direct follow-up to the Sacrifice of Angels mod for Homeworld. I assume that means a lot of the same modders who worked on the Homeworld mod are working on the Sins mod.

The Borg are pretty brutal in Sacrifice of Angels, too. They can research regeneration abilities that cause them to regain hull points faster than a large fleet can damage them. They also can "assimilate" enemy ships just like in Armada, and Borg capital ships (called "elite ships" in the mod) can even assimilate enemy elite ships if given enough time. They're a little hard to play as at the start, as their ships and structures suck up fleet supply and logistics slots like crazy, but once they get the ball rolling they're nigh unstoppable.

Man I miss the old Armada and SFC communities. I wonder if any of the old modders like Cozbo are involved.

Major update to the mod was released 12/15/2014 that added Cardassian race (which you can research full Cardassian or Card/Dominion alliance). Plus they did a lot of re-balancing Federation, Klingons, Romulans and Borg and added a boatload of new content.

I'm curious . . . how has this not gotten any copyright takedown notices? Who owns the rights to Star Trek? I get DMCA take down notices for 3 seconds worth of background music in gameplay footage I upload to my YouTube channel and this gets nothing for over a year?

Because Youtube has automated mechanisms to do music matching now.

For game mods and such it will be a more legal paper process.

CBS owns the rights to Star Trek. Not sure who owns the rights to Star Trek Armada, but CBS will also own the copyright to the name, so they can file a C&D on those grounds if they so desire.

True, but I've also gotten flags from Square Enix, though they usually drop it within a week of my disputing it. The music groups are always from the UK or Australia and let the dispute ride for 30 days after which YouTube drops it.

I'm still seething over CCP and Vaulderie.

A single C&D would kill this.

Better grab it now and file it away.

Activision held the gaming license to Star Trek for a while, I think they lost it a while back though. Ultimately, Star Trek is owned by Viacom. But I wouldn't be too worried about this mod getting a C&D order anytime soon. Viacom has been pretty cool about letting mod communities for Star Trek games like the Armada series and Bridge Commander thrive for the past decade, and I don't think Star Trek mods for non-Star Trek games have ever been shut down. This mod in particular may attract attention since it's masquerading as a sequel to Armada, unlike the other prominent Star Trek mod Sacrifice of Angels 2, but I still wouldn't worry much. I doubt Viacom really cares.

Youtube is a different matter. Youtube has automatic "Content ID" bots that take down anything that's registered under copyright holders, even if it's really not something the copyright holder would care about. It's why most gameplay videos from Star Trek mods have to mute the music.

No, Star Trek - the IP and broadcasting rights are controlled by CBS. While the controlling interests between CBS and Viacom behind the scenes are technically the same, the two are separate and distinct companies. Star Trek Online, for example, answers completely to CBS when it comes to creative decisions (still and to this day) with their game and creative license.

That said, I believe that CBS has loosened their grip quite a bit over the last few years regarding creative control on various Star Trek related licenses, and you're right, I don't think they've gone after any small fan/enthusiast based projects that I can recall.

Ah, then I stand corrected. In any case, whoever controls the relevant rights to Star Trek has never messed with the modding community.
