I find Star Trek TOS insufferably bad to begin with.

I watched "The Corbomite Maneuver" on disc three of my Star Trek Season 1 Special Edition Blu-Rays and found it terrible though it's often listed as one of the best.

Kirk refuses to share health information with his doctor and it is considered macho (wouldn't admit being winded), he bemoans having a woman yeoman, Spock gives irrelevant and completely useless insight that is immediately dismissed (chess instead of poker), and they spend almost the entire episode toggling back and forth between what is on the view screen and the people staring back. The gimmick ending does not pay off and only layers on the stupid.

I was going crazy trying to force myself through it. I intend to finish the entire series but so far this is torture.

Life is too short to spend your free time doing something you don't even like. Just shrug and say "I'll never understand the appeal" and move on to something you actually DO enjoy

Too many pop culture references and I want to be able to substantiate my criticisms when some idiot in my life talks about how great it is.

If there are any episodes I haven't seen then they are in the third season, but I figured Special Edition and adulthood warranted rewatching the others too. If anything, it's worse than I remember. Gene is a hack.

Just let it go; get a (better) life. You are doing things completely wrong.

I think an original Star Trek - original Batman mashup would be awesome. Take one of those scenes of everyone being thrown around the bridge and add Batman.

Star Trek TOS is like Star Wars. When I was a little kid it was fantastic cool stuff from outer space! Now it's a bunch of goofballs in silly costumes beating each other with cardboard and Styrofoam.

I 100% feel you there. I want to force myself to get through TOS one day just so when I tell people TNG is by far the best Trek I know what I am talking about. It is just so dated and terrible I have pretty much given up and admitted TOS is the best Trek.

ToS came out when TV was much simpler... so that they kind of had to be obvious such as in this clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vi7QQ5pO7_A&t=2m21s

So after being exposed to more subtler and outstanding T.V. of which there were few examples before the 90s it's easy to look at TOS dismissively...

Remember though that TNG wasn't an immediate success and the first season and most of the 2nd season of that show wasn't considered to be much better than TOS at all.

One of the best episodes of the first few seasons is regarded by a large percentage of Star Trek fans to be this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bArr-xmo22g&t=3m45s

Sure you can bag on TOS (hell I'm a fan of it and I make fun of the Kirk vs Gorn episode fighting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hnBp7x2QAE) because it seems so quaint and blunt in its story telling by today's standards and yes special effects were laughable back then compared with what is available today but without TOS... TNG would probably not have happened.

Crudeness is no excuse for spending several minutes looking at the same thing in the viewer screen only to determine that it didn't work then spending another ten minutes looking at it when it slightly changes for no reason at all (smaller ship breaks off). Corbomite Maneuver should have been a 20 minute episode.

TOS was great but admittedly is sadly dated. Same with The Prisoner, another show in which the protagonist talked a computer into self-destructing.

You're welcome to your opinion I just happen to have a different one.

Considering the number of national networks and the lack of other channels like basic cable that caters to niche audiences TOS does stand out for doing what good sci-fi does at times and that is hold up an allegorical mirror to society.

Given that it was 40+ years ago that it was on t.v. I'm willing to cut it some slack. T.V. has changed a lot in 40 years.

Go back to some 15-20 year old P.C. games which older people remember fondly which seem dated today... people could bag on them for much the same reasons... seems like something some people in this thread would have fun doing as well.

Trying to remake TOS or even TNG is a big waste IMO. Both of which are very dated (TNG not as much but still...) and TV has changed alot in that amount of time. The acting, writing, among many other thing other than special effects have improved.

If a new trek TV series is to be successful and appeal to anyone other than the hardcore fans, the need to stop with the prequels, midquels, alternate timelines and other crap. Instead they need to go into the future like the 50 or so years after TNG/DS9/VOY. Come up with some new technological concepts. Have some new conflicts (The dominion wars were great, and most of all, have a more diverse array of characters.

Essentially, I'd like to see an improved version of DS9 minus the flaws.

Two points, come to mind here.

The first is that I (like most people), like certain TV programs and films, and don't like other ones. There is no need for me (or anyone), to make a thread, because they don't like particular TV programs or films, that are available for them to watch.
tl;dr
Feel free to watch the stuff you like (if you want to), and leave alone the stuff you don't like to watch.

Secondly, I'm somewhat (but not crazy mad about it) a star trek fan, myself.

The thing is, I've watched (over the years, and recently, as I have the full original star trek DVD set, and more), all the episodes. So although I can watch the old, original stuff, I've seen it all before, already.

So these (fan mock up, kickstarter funded) "new" episodes, made in the original style as far as reasonably practicably possible. Are a way, that fans, such as myself, can watch "new"/fresh episode(s), which we have NEVER seen before.

As a fan, I am very pleased to have this as an option, and plan to watch the four new episodes (if I understand things, correctly), myself, somewhat shortly. (I've looked at a few minutes of them, on youtube, and LIKED what I have seen, so far).

Yes, they mostly (I think one or more, has joined the re-make) don't have the original actors, for obvious reasons. But that was a necessary compromise.

If you REALLY, REALLY wanted to have a full sized Mona Lisa painting, in your main room. You could either save up and be prepared to spend something like (circa) $40,000,000++ for the original one, and still maybe get a refusal for the owner(s) to sell up.

Or put up a perfectly reasonable (cheap) replica.

Being realistic, your options would be a boring (cut off your nose, to spite your face) blank (white) wall, or a (to you) very nice looking replica.

tl;dr
I think the fans have created a nice watchable options, for star trek (original) fans, if they want to go down that route. Anyone else, can just switch to another TV channel, or come here and do a big RANT about how much they hate it.

ST TNG is so laughable... 7 years of episodes... maybe 10 or so of them watchable.
Even the most hated Voyager has almost that many watchable episodes...

TOS is the greatest thing ever.
