I've been (reluctantly)watching s05, and... it's better than the previous four seasons. I still don't like it much, but I'd watch further seasons to see where it went. Rayner's cool, but his shipmates are trying to break him.

One of my biggest problems with Discovery in general is it looks like it's designed by 12yr olds. The "science" in Trek is dubious at best, but it's mostly plausible if you squint and don't think about it too much. How the fuck does a spore drive even work? It looks like pure magic. "Wouldn't it be cool if you could just transport immediately...".

How the fuck does Booker's ship work, and what's the benefit? "Wouldn't it be cool if ships were in disconnected modules, and could reconfigure mid flight..."

How the fuck do those bikes/skimmers/ whatever the fuck they are work? "Wouldn't it be cool to have a motorcycle That takes off immediately, and goes faster than sound..."

It's all childish fantasy shit.

I actually liked the moral dilemma the spore drive represented.

Had the entire show been more like season 5 I would have been looking forward to a season 6.

But the "feels" ..... ugh.

Good riddance to bad rubbish!

"Enterprise" was a monument of decency, compared to this demented crap.

I am hate watching the last season. It is remarkable how they turned a meh episode of TNG into an entire boring season of television with some of the clunkiest dialogue I can remember while still obsessing about "connection" and people constantly rehashing their various traumas/poor relationship choices.

I am also developing an intense malevolent dislike of the personal transporters.

I just finished a rewatch of Enterprise today. I'm sad to see it end. It's my least favorite of the good Treks, but it was still a good Trek.

and yea, personal transporters eat shit. Another 'how the fuck does that work' thing. They magically go to the exact coordinates they want without saying anything to a computer or typing anything in. Magic fantasy shit.

Good thing Pinewood Toronto has plenty of production going for MGM/Amazon

Discovery shot all five seasons in Pinewood Toronto.

$10 million per episode??? It would be excessive if it were $1 million!

I think these studios like to present inflated production costs. Makes them feel important or something.

Maybe they should make the next series in Hungary or Italy. Should be $100,000 per episode max without the actors' salaries of course. It should also give the show a nice European vibe.

Just for a picosecond. Once the natural weak force/strong force interactions recombine the subatomic particles, atoms and molecules back into the person, everything would be back to normal. So not a big deal, scientifically speaking

This has got me thinking. Star Trek should do an infotainment series that delves deep into Star Trek technologies.

but the old person's consciousness would be dead and gone, replaced by a new identical person!

I don't know what "consciousness" even is. As long as I feel the same after it's all over, that's perfectly fine(and assuming you don't get cancer or something in 10 years).

Regarding the 'how Trek science works' show. If you're talking about fiction, I think it's best left murky. Leaves more room for writers, and when real science comes up with something contradictory, they can say "Yea, that's what I meant". I'd like to see a hard science analysis show of Trek tech though. What's possible with current tech, and advanced theory on how to make Trek tech possible.

Star Trek did show us the future in many ways. I would not have believed you as a kid if you had told me that we would've battery charged handheld digital medical diagnostic devices like blood glucose monitors, blood pressure machines and oximeters. Heck, Keyto is a device that can tell you how deep into ketosis your body is from detecting acetone levels in your breath and it's the size of a frickin' fat pen!

It's easy to take a lot our cool shit for granted. It becomes normal and boring, and you forget how amazing it all really is. Might not be quite as miraculous as Trek tech, but it's orders of magnitude closer than it was even 50 years ago.

What I hate about a lot of the new Trek is that it has moved from sci-fi to basically magic. There was a scene in Picard where they use some magic mcguffin to perfectly render a past event (a murder) in a room from like a week ago using "magic". They don't even bother to explain it, like it just perfectly recreates a hologram from what happened in a room a week ago with zero input.

Then you have this show which is so lazy. Everything revolves around Michael Burham, they may as well have named the show Star Trek: Michael Burham. She saved everything and everyone 100 times over, all while crying.

That’s been my issue with this series as well…Michael Burnham…all the time, saving everything everywhere.
