I did like it better than I thought I would. It just has some things that make me wonder why did they do that.

The way the crew interacted was decent. A nice balance between Orville and formal talking statues of TNG. (well except for the whole mutiny thing).

The way procedures ran on the ship was very good. Except for the whole sending the 1st officer into a microwave oven. Hey guys Drones are cool now a days.

The main ack was from the Klingon things, the super stylized camera with CGI or weird lighting in every shot and starting off with a super war.

Going to play devil's advocate and say I liked it more than disliked it. It was no where near the level of bad as I was expecting, though certainly it had some dumb moments. I wish they would stop rebooting the look of Klingons constantly. TMP/TNG reboot I like, and they were able to justify the look of Klingons in ToS in later episodes of Enterprise. But that should have been where they drew the line. Then they reboot their look in Star Trek 11-13. Now they're rebooting it AGAIN only a few years later. >.> I think I would like the look better if only they didn't call them klingons.

Evidently Star Trek Discovery was pushed back due to some loser Cincinnati football team doing what it does best. I can't wait until Star Trek starts so that I can watch a 1 hour television show with 30 minutes of commercials.

I hate broadcast television.
Huh, so that is the reason? Well, set the PVR, and...missed it, since I knew it was short, no use in watching 15 actual mins of show and 15 mins of commercials.

*edit, seems Episode 2 has already been shown on their portal, and is out in the wild.

The problem with this joke is that Star Trek has never followed that convention for abbreviating their series. TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT. It should be DIS following the convention set by Voyager and Enterprise, but the official abbreviation is DSC.

/no I'm clearly not a blast at parties

STD, hehehe, I like it. I'm totally calling it that.

STD has a budget of about 8 million dollars per episode on average... one can guess that episodes that feature more visual effects than usual (such as ones featuring space battles could cost a bit more)

CBS must be counting on STD as a loss leader to get people to buy into their streaming service.

Like any project set in the vastness of space, Star Trek: Discovery is big. The starships, the soundstages the series if filmed on, and even fan expectations are all super-sized. That's why it's not a surprise that the budget for the upcoming series is big, too.

A Variety cover story on the latest Star Trek franchise revealed just how much each episode of the series costs to make — between $8 and $8.5 million, making the show one of the most expensive in television history.

that's one expensive show but having watched the first episode at least they obviously invested a sizable portion of the budget into the visual and special effects.

Hmm, looks like I missed it. I guess that's OK, because it's going to be a cold day in hell before I sign up for yet another paid streaming service just to watch a single show on it.

I'm sure that this will make it to Netflix eventually, even if I have to wait for the BluRay release. I can wait.

I tried to watch it on a local CBS channel. I haven't watched local broadcast television in years. I turn to the channel and all I see is Oprah Winfrey discussing politics. WTF?

Same here. After I wiped the vomit off my TV screen, I reprogrammed my DVR and watched FTWD, The Deuce and the Last Ship. Shows anything is better than than Winfrey and friends.

Wow, lot of commercials! I really think it was close to 50%.
Overall, I liked it and will watch it when it goes to Netflix. The Klingons were a little hard to take with their super slow speeches.

It wasn't great and it wasn't terrible. In fact I came away feeling rather empty, all things considered. So I dunno; I guess I keep watching. While I'm not offended, I'm also not feeling very hopeful.

I do hate the look though. It's as if they made a TV version of the Kelvin movies. Someone please get them a proper phaser!

The writing was too forced, everyone seemed to have to tell their life story at some akward moment. Normally we discover characters as the series goes on. It's like it was written to tell you everything so you get interested to join our silly little stream service to watch our silly little show.

There is nothing else I would pay for on CBS and this show is another. No thanks.

PS when will the ever create a show with no sound in space.
PSS And the Klingons were horrible. Looked like halloween plastic masks and armor.

40 minutes of show per episode, including the opening, credits, and preview for next episode.

TOS episodes were 50 minutes long. TNG was 45 minutes. VOY 44 minutes. ENT 43 minutes.

Sad.

I'm in the middle in terms of liking it. Reviews around the Internet are either in the middle or positive. I'm not going to cave in to CBS and subscribe to their service to watch it. I can wait until it hits another service. Apparently in the UK they get to watch it on Netflix.

I'm cautiously optimistic so far. The next few episodes will make or break it for me. Character development needs to take a few beats and not rush through everything like in the first two eps. Tech looked pretty decent, effects not bad, Klingons kind of meh. The intra-galactic mind meld raised an eyebrow on me...not something that should be overused.

I'm only 20 minutes in so I'm not reading the whole thread yet, but so far I think it's not too bad. In fact dare I say I'm optimistic?

Some dialogue are cringe inducing (and too 'on the nose' with all the explanation as if it's the first Trek series ever - well for some viewers, this *is* probably their first) with the addition of awkward interactions between the crew, but whenever this happened I simply just remind myself of how cringey and awkward ST-TNG 1x01 was, and this is already 10 times better.

I also had to remind myself that this is the timeline of the new Trek movies, so everything I've learned from TOS-TNG-VOY-DS9 timeline doesn't mean anything here. I hated this reboot thing deeply, as I wanted to know what happened after the Dominion War, not start over from the beginning and change potentially everything I know about the Star Trek universe. I still haven't watched the last movie and only have a vague memory of what the first two movies were about (I remember that there's Khan, but that's about it). Either way, it's a Trek series so I'll probably do the free trial and see how I feel after three episodes.

Speaking about stupid streaming subscription (freakin greedy CBS), my friends in different countries in Asia are watching this series on Netflix (it'll come up once a week at US air time, ala HBO Go). This is probably one of the only times we're being disadvantaged by living in the US

....I also had to remind myself that this is the timeline of the new Trek movies, so everything I've learned from TOS-TNG-VOY-DS9 timeline doesn't mean anything here....

THIS is where things get a little hairy, as least for me. So, we are set before the reboot movies, and even get a date at the beginning of the show.

"Set roughly ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series,[2] the show sees the Klingon T'Kuvma work to unite the 24 great Klingon houses, leading to a cold war between his race and the United Federation of Planets that involves the crew of the USS Discovery.[3][4]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Discovery

So, was this "cold war" thing totally new to the reboot? I know in the original Star Trek Klingons weren't allies until Episode 6, but I don't remember a reference to them at all in the reboot movies.

Can anyone help me out here?

The Klingons were a little hard to take with their super slow speeches.

I tuned out once or twice during their speeches. For example, I have no idea what they told the White Klingon during the show. I wasn't paying attention.
