Lol define record. 1 more would be a "record."

I never even HEARD of CBS all access until I started investigating the new Star Trek series. So yes, getting anyone to sign up would definitely be a record. Getting me to sign up would be a fuckin miracle.

Wow, lot of commercials! I really think it was close to 50%.
Overall, I liked it and will watch it when it goes to Netflix. The Klingons were a little hard to take with their super slow speeches.
The Klingons look too stiff and too covered with thick cumbersome garments to be warriors. They seem more like a fanatical religious cult then a warrior race. Again, if they'd made them an original alien race it would be infinitely more palatable.

So having her kill the Klingon leader guy makes no sense if it was her plan to capture him and she had plenty of time unless the phasers they use now no longer have stun settings.

Sure it gets the klingons to unite around his death but if that was the plan why bother explaining earlier why they should not had done it.

Stupid misleading headline.

I finally got to watch both episodes, and...I would most likely keep watching it if it was on network TV, but, nope, not gonna pay more $$$ to watch the rest of the season.

Arrrrghhhh! What ye be sayin, matey?

this is my kind of thing
The problem with this joke is that Star Trek has never followed that convention for abbreviating their series. TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT.

thats nowhere near correct.

Star Trek was never TOS. It wasn't even called TOS until long after The Next Generation. It's actually with Deep Space 9 that they started creating acronyms for it, so it goes DS9, TNG+TOS, VOY, ENT. STD. because STD is funny.

show was shit.

Nah... I don't even care enough to bother pirating it
Heh, actually, I watched it on a friend's phone, he got a free trial.
So, no, no pirating here--though I bet it would have been a better viewing experience. It was jerky & pixelated in some parts of the show and commercials (which had the volume cranked up compared to the show.)

Real turn off.

That's terrible. So this is a pay-to-view show that has the length of free-to-air shows, compared to other premium channels that push 55-65 minutes per episode.
Bear in mind the ultimate goal here is still to sell the show into syndication. Paramount still makes bank year over year from stations and networks licensing Star Trek for syndication, and over the years they have made far more money that way than by first-run revenues.

I also had to remind myself that this is the timeline of the new Trek movies, so everything I've learned from TOS-TNG-VOY-DS9 timeline doesn't mean anything here.
So according to the producers, this is set in the Prime universe. Which right now at least, doesn't look like it's going to be easy to reconcile. They haven't made any major violations, but it also doesn't make any efforts to really fit in.

So, was this "cold war" thing totally new to the reboot? I know in the original Star Trek Klingons weren't allies until Episode 6, but I don't remember a reference to them at all in the reboot movies.

Can anyone help me out here?
Canon has never dealt a great deal with the period before TOS. Enterprise focused on the very founding of the Federation and Starfleet, but there's still that roughly 90 year gap. There have been a few off-hand statements from characters, otherwise the only major canonical elements of pre-TOS history have been WW3, the war with the Romulans, and the fact that the Federation and the Klingons never got along until after Star Trek VI.

A popular fan theory is that this show will tie into the Battle of Axanar, fought by Garth of Izar. This was a real quick throw-away backstory for a character (Garth) in a season 3 TOS episode. And while the episode is canon, like pretty much anything TOS, they weren't exactly concerned about canon back wrote what seemed good at the time.

Okay, thanks.

Sorry CBS, keep your STD.
Well when you put it that way I have to agree. Plus these Klingons all have speech impediments which make them sound stupid. Their clothes suck....where's Garak when you need a good tailor?

Then the captain just parked the ship right in front of the intruder like she's about to place an order at a drive up window and the admiral is a bozo. This show is off to very slow start, however, TNG's far point station was a slow mover too. Too bad they want us to give them money to watch it. The Orville on the other hand delivers exactly what you expect for it to and I like it.

SPACE HERPES!

I don't mind the new series, certainly liking it more than the last ST attempt. I don't mind the Klingon change either. But CBS paywall? bwahahahhaha. They are insane.

Cast sucks so bad that this show will die in its incubator... CBS just lost their mind.

I like the Captain. The XO seems a bit too young and a bit too much of a cutie to be a senior officer in what is basically a military in times of war.

Blame the credits that you see in the very beginning of the first episode. You don't introduce a regular cast member like that.
It was bound to happen anyhow. She's way too high profile to be a regular on a TV show. A lot of us have been calling her death since her participation was announced.

THIS is where things get a little hairy, as least for me. So, we are set before the reboot movies, and even get a date at the beginning of the show.

"Set roughly ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series,[2] the show sees the Klingon T'Kuvma work to unite the 24 great Klingon houses, leading to a cold war between his race and the United Federation of Planets that involves the crew of the USS Discovery.[3][4]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Discovery

So, was this "cold war" thing totally new to the reboot? I know in the original Star Trek Klingons weren't allies until Episode 6, but I don't remember a reference to them at all in the reboot movies.

Can anyone help me out here?

You are correct that the setting of Discovery was set before (most of) the events in the new movies, but the new movie timeline started breaking around the time that Kirk was born (the first scene in the first new movie), which did happen before the timeline of Discovery.

What's interesting to me is finding out that Kirk is already alive in Discovery. Ha. I did not see that coming. I wonder why they decided to do that.

So according to the producers, this is set in the Prime universe. Which right now at least, doesn't look like it's going to be easy to reconcile. They haven't made any major violations, but it also doesn't make any efforts to really fit in.

Well this threw me off. I read once that it's going to be set in the new movies timeline and I believed it and never heard about it again since. Are you sure about this?

Just chiming in here to say I really liked ST DIS, was damn good actually .
But yeah she should've shot that Klingon in the legs & not in the back (she didn't have time to dial the phaser down), but then the plot for the Klingons going to war would be gone or delayed , they should've come up with a more plausible scene. Him being dead from the explosion for example! lol.

Oh & I agree broadcasting it on just 2 'channels' is a mistake, here in the UK Netflix (HD) is £7.50/mth

ep2:
Why didn't the capt use red shirts instead of the 1st officer?!
hell, red shirts AND the 1st officer?!?!

at least some explanation like because of the extensive dmg to the ship, transporter functionality was limited.

also, from ep1, wtf all the Klingon and federation ships arriving on each side at the same time?
they were all scattered at different distances...

I really like the show but I can't take the slow pace of the Klingon dialog. It's just too frustrating and I really may just stop watching if it keeps up. It makes it hard to follow along with the captions. I'm finding it better to mute the TV when they talk.

I'm having flashbacks of those stupid kids back in elementary school that were asked to read aloud, but they couldn't read for shit.
