Yea, FC was fun and I loved the job Cromwell did playing the inventor of the warp-drive but RM was really, really up for TWOK, a great performance, I was at the premier, it was nutty with tons of people dressed in TOS outfits but damm did that movie delivered!.
Got that set at a pawn shop for $6. Still feel a little guilty. When I watched Star Trek II on a big (55") screen for the first time since I saw it in the theater...well. Emotions were experienced.
Since we're all nostalgic about STNG and TOS maybe it's time for a look at the thread I started last year about "The doomsday machine revealed", great, great script by Spinard and fully scored by Sol Kaplan, http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2422870
This movie is so ridiculous. Why is Counselor Troi acting as mission control? She's a therapist. Why are Geordi and Riker in the space ship? If they hadn't come back in time, did Cochran have no other plans for people to help him with this massive test? Blasting off to Magic Carpet Ride? So cheesy. They would never have put something like that in the series. On and on it goes with this movie, who the fuck wrote it? How do they go from ending the series on such a high note with "All Good Things", and beginning the movie saga with garbage like this?
She's also a Lt. commander IIRC; there was a TNG episode about her training for command.

One could argue that people with actual experience in a ship capable of warp speed trumps those that don't. In opposition one could argue that those who helped build this ship probably know more about this specific ship.

Star Trek movies were always made to be more accessible to the masses than the series were (as well as having a far larger element of comic relief). Furthermore, what was it about Zephram Cochrane's character in this film that made you think "classy"?
She became a full Commander, one rank below Captain. The same as Riker. She could probably cut the mustard as a first officer on another ship if she really wanted to.

Have to LOL @ people THAT close to a 1st stage burn, any rocket capable of propelling a large payload into orbit is NOT something you want to be 20 feet away from as it's running!.

Obviously he did, because that's how it happened in the original timeline. When the Borg went back and attacked, those people were killed (remember all the dead people in the missile silo?), which is why the crew filled in to help the launch go as planned.

I have to disagree. TNG initiated the change in the Borg with Hugh; and it could be argued that it happened even before Hugh when they assimilated Picard then made him a Borg and an individual amongst the Borg as Locutus.
Oh, and First Contact is my favorite Trek movie by far.
Hugh was separated though. In Voyager, you had the queen there personally taunting Janeway. It seems like there'd be better uses of her time. All that effort to get a body out of storage. (And also taunting Picard, take your pick.)
Locutus: That character retained alien "Borg-like" qualities. The queen characters were just.....like something out of any primetime TV show. Too personal.
Locutus referred to people by name, but didn't seem to be emotionally invested in any of it.

Yeah, a bit too "yeeee-hawwwww!"
I suppose I would've liked a bit more dignity applied to the whole "leaving Earth at superluminal speed for the first time" thing. Aliens or not, if we ever manage that technological advance, it's kind of a big deal.
