I'm about halfway through Season 1. This is waaaaaaaay better than I was expecting! It does a good job of having fun with itself in the vein of Galaxy Quest, while also having some serious moments a la Star Trek. I was hankering for a solid Star Trek spoof after watching the USS Calister episode of Black Mirror!
The graphics are fun but oddly rendered in certain places (mostly the exterior ship shots), like not always anti-aliased & stuff. But some of the artwork is pretty beautiful & the ship has a pretty fun, novel design with the triple-engine. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's a little thing I wish they'd clean up just to tighten up the look with the rest of the show.
I like the relatable banter, it's like a much more realistic version of Star Trek with how people actually behave. The humor is pretty good at times too. Although I feel like they need to hire an additional comedy writer because a lot of the humor could be a LOT funnier. And they need to make certain quips quicker to get more of a laugh out of you, like in the pilot episode when the captain is meeting all of the senior crew & the one pilot asks if soda is okay on the bridge. That should have been a quick quip, not a central comedy point, because it was pretty funny, especially when he takes a sip while flying the ship, but they kind of over-focused on it and left you hanging a bit. So the comedy needs to mature a bit, as well as the timing of the editing & writing.
Lots of fun ideas. The Pria episode had a pretty good twist. I liked the one with the stranded ark as well (lol @ the Liam Neeson cameo). I like that they do a touch & go on the topics in each episode...fun enough to explore them a bit & kick around a neat idea for the episode, and not get sucked into deeper for more than that. It's an easy show to just plunk down & watch. I push off watching a lot of shows simply because I don't have the mental brainpower to deal with watching them after work sometimes, lol.
The prosthetics are sooooooooo much better than Star Trek as well...I'm watching the episode where they infiltrate the Krill ship right now, with the holographic projectors, and their alien faces are just really excellent. I love Star Trek, but the aliens always bugged me with how goofy they looked.
I would call this show a spoof with heart. It's simple & fun to watch. It also feels like the early episodes of Scrubs (another goofy show with heart), before the show got its groove on - I'm hoping they can figure out the line delivery, improve the humor, and smooth out the other rough edges, because I could see myself watching a bunch of seasons of this show if they keep filming it & especially if they keep improving it.
