That's what I'm thinking. Going back to episode 1, it was basically Kelly who got Captain Mercer that job because she felt guilty about Ed's post divorce depression.

In a world where those two were never an item, that wouldn't have happened. Who knows what that change of captain might have changed... they still might be at war with the Krill or getting decimated by Moclans for all we know.

However, Bortus and Clyden dancing was worth watching the whole show for.

But then again that was the Kelly that went out with Ed and went from party animal to taking her live seriously.
If she keeps partying she probably won't make captain and Ed might make captain on his own because he isn't depressed about the divorce.
Now they are free to make them a couple again though.

Good point TheELF. Ed was married to his work, sort of speak. Kelly was a playa. That said though. The new young Kelly can see what she can accomplish.
Alternatively, I think it's also possible that the show can make a very controversial social commentary here. That marriage can be good, even a bad/failed one.

I thought at the end of the last show, it was very likely that the wipe did not actually happen. And even if the wipe did take effect, the new Kelly took a different path than the old Kelly. There are two time lines.

I imagine they are cliffhangering it in a way that it is a single timeline ---> to the older ones. Thus history changes for them(not that they would realize it).

Heh... OK. That said, the Orville has two advantages here:

1) It's a "Sci-Fi Dramedy" that isn't trying to take itself too seriously. I mean, come on... the male lead is famous for making an adult cartoon that's mostly based on fart jokes

2) Since it's a new show, it doesn't have 50 years of "rules" to follow like Star Trek does. So, they can make shit up on the fly and mostly get away with it.

Sure, that might not be "fair", but then this show is probably never going to get the ratings that a Star Trek show would because it doesn't have the built in fan base.

Some people will never be satisfied!! For entertainment value Discovery is over the top!!
In every series ever made there will be people who expect it to be logical and all and follow peoper science and what not!!
Get over it!! It is a series made on TV and it is done well! So quit crying and enjoy Discovery for what it is -- A very well done program!!

Nice to see Alara again but was she even awake to do her part? Issac can show more emotion.

The shuttle hit the water going how fast? Didnt even affect the crew inside.

Yeah, I had no idea that Union ships could also be used as submarines until now.

Not really much different than the Star Trek Movie "Into Darkness" where the USS Enterprise was underwater like a submarine.

Then think about some of the WWII aircraft carriers they are now finding at the bottom of some of the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean. Other than a couple of holes from torpedo hits, they look pretty much the way they did before they sunk. I can't find one of the videos I saw where it showed an International Harvester tow tractor still on the hanger deck. It looked untouched and you could still read the International Harvester logo that was painted on it from the factory.

Actually, I think a submarine would probably make a good space ship. It can carry huge amounts of water in the ballast tanks and pretty much air tight. Too bad it would take an enormous amount of energy to get one in orbit. I guess you could send it up in sections, but look how many launches it took to put the ISS together. So at this time it isn't even feasible.

Edit 2: Subs are engineered for inward pressure. ISS for outward pressure too. But with the massive amount of acceleration a "starship" likely experiences, sub is the toughness required.
