A note on TNG - the first 2-3 seasons are stiff and unpolished. Watch the series premiere (2 hours), plus a few picks of interesting episodes from seasons 1-3, and otherwise pick it up starting with the season finale of season 3. That's when the show really hit its stride and became interesting.

Trek fans will argue about series all day, but personally, I was a huge fan until Voyager came out and somehow managed to lower the bar for quality.

I thought that they really messed up the ending of Voyager with the whole "future Janeway" thing. Seemed like a cop-out ending.

And the End of Enterprise was just a WTF moment. They totally f-cked that one up.

When did Riker grow the beard? I seem to remember the series getting much better after that point (seriously!).

He had it at the beginning of season 2.
I think the reason so many don't like DS9 is that everything isn't spelled out for them and it has a political overtone that is above some viewers heads. I will concede that the Bajorans are a bunch of whiney bitch assholes, but episodes that don't center around them and their beliefs are very good.

There are several episodes of both TNG and DS9 which, in reruns, now have a warning played at the beginning about being "intended for mature audiences" due to their between-the-lines social and political commentary.

Star Trek isn't just a great sci-fi franchise; it's chock full of engaging believable stories that happen to be in a sci-fi setting.

the original, 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', is an excellent movie and you dont need to be a trekkie.
