From The Digital Bits:

We've been told to expect the studio to officially announce the DVD release of Star Wars: Episode I next week as well (for an October 16th street date). Is the wait finally over? We'll have to wait and see. But these same sources accurately predicted the Godfather announcement earlier this week, so cross your fingers...

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

Disc One - the film in anamorphic widescreen video, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, THX-certified, audio commentary by director George Lucas and various members of the production team, weblink to StarWars.com

Disc Two - the film's teaser and theatrical trailers, the Duel of the Fates music video, 9 TV spots, production still gallery, "making of" documentary, multiple production featurettes (on the special effects, costumes, set decoration and art direction, screenwriting and lightsaber duel choreography), multi-angle "animatic" footage (for introduction, pod race 2nd lap and underwater Gungan city scenes), 7 fully post-produced deleted scenes (pod race "starting grid" sequence, complete pod race "2nd lap" sequence, "waterfall" sequence, Coruscant "aero-taxi" sequence, "sunrise before the podrace", "Anakin and Greedo" and "farewell to Jira&quot and more.

Both discs are also expected to feature elaborate, fully-animated menus. If these turn out to be the real thing, the set promises to be pretty cool. But what I'd really like to see is John Williams' score on an isolated, 5.1 audio track. Now THAT would be cool. We'll post the complete specs next week when they're officially announced.

This, plus The Simpsons!

This looks like it's going to be good....won't hit the level of t2:UE though.

Unless it comes with a lightsabre

<< It's probably going to MSRP at $60 or better, too. >>

What the hell are you talking about? I bet it will be available at your local Best Buy for $25 or less when it comes out. sheesh...how expensive do you people think DVDs are?!

Anyway, this is going to be one sweet DVD...absolute reference material if you have a good audio/video system. If anyone has heard the Episode 1 laser disc they will agree...one of the most amazing soundtracks EVER...the podrace especially. bass down to 5hz... can you say WOW!! as for the movie... well that's a different story

<< i hope this isn't a tease >>

I actually wouldn't be surprised if it were quite high. The special edition tape of Episode 1 was forty bucks when it first came out (the box was the same width as two video tapes? anyone else seen it?)

Lucas needs to come back down to reality. Phantom Menace flat out sucked.

I'm glad SW is finally coming out on DVD (just like it took Braveheart forever) but there's no way I'm paying full MSRP. I think kami has the right idea, this thing will be on special everywhere, esp probably Best Buy. Although I have never paid $25 for a DVD this would be worth it.

That is awesome! I had heard that Lucas was going to wait for a really long time to relase PM because he got screwed over on Laser Disc release and he wanted to be sure that the DVD's were a proven technology.

I will buy it when it comes out. I liked the movie because I wasn't tricked by the "hype machine." I knew it would never live up to the hype.

How could dolby digital EX be 5.1? EX is for extended sound, i thoght that was a 6.1 solution adding an extra rear channel in the middle

It will be really far from true reference material. The audio quality on DVD is very good but not reference quality, and the video is not even freaking close. DVD is SVIDEO res which is only 800x600 FAR from reference quality video.

I'd think that the TPM DVD would have to be as close to reference quality as DVD can be, since Lucas is a stickler for quality video and sound. You should be able to use it to show off any home theater setup.
