Alright, I finally figured out exactly where he went wrong. Back when the first one came out I hypothesized George would try to recapture the magic from the first movie, specifically the chemistry between Leia and Luke. He did TRY to do that with Episodes 1,2 and 3, but he failed. And to cover it up he used assloads of CGI.
In order to recapture the magic in Episode 1 he should have done the following:
-Copy the original formula, particularly from Episode 4. It wouldnt have been original, but it would have worked. Put Padme in some awful, dire situation right at the beginning, and have Obi Wan rescue her, BY HIMSELF. Qui Gon is totally unnecessary in these movies.
-Bring teenaged Annakin in ASAP. If he's not in the postion to rescue anyone right off the bat (which would make sense) then he needs his own personal obstacle to overcome, ideally with Obi Wans help. But it should be relatively quick and straightforward and not waste half the fucking movie. This podracing bullshit was a huge waste of valuable time. Also, his obstacle should be brutal and ugly. So maybe instead of racing the aliens he should have watched his mother be horribly massacred and then got his revenge on the assailants right there on the spot. Then he moves on. Thats it. No long, drawn-out bullshit, just Obi Wan and the potential for awesomeness.
-Have him meet up with Padme in some awesome scenario, have them team up to overcome an even greater obstacle (making sure Annakin is actually REQUIRED to complete the goal), and let the romance happen naturally.
Thats it. Less bullshit, more story, and more things that are important instead of time wasters. This is a formula which pretty much ALL good movies follow. Why George forget this I do not know. Again, it doesnt have to be original if its just plain good.
