Funny you should mention it.

I'm playing planetside and I just went from 512 to 1024 and it made a HUGE difference. Planetside is quite playable w/ 512 but it certainly will take advantage of 1024.

don't these MMORPG pay to play games usually give you a free month or so of play time when you buy the game? Is that normal or an exception? I really think these games that charge $40+ dollars then $15/month to play should at the very least give you 1-2 free months as a starter when you buy the game. Alot of work ($) goes into making these games and the server environments. I can respect that and their bottom line but $15/month seems high with a $45-50 initial price tag. Blizzard has been hosting bnet, even poorly, for free for years. Its not the same but still... it puts the $15/month fee in perspective. Its not cool for someone like me who may only play like 5-10 hours in a whole month. I want to try the game and I am not at all afraid of the cost but if I signed on for all the MMORPG's I'd like to try or dabble with, I'd be paying $50-70+/month for a few hours here and there. Thats hardly fair. People like me should be allowed a hourly time card option for something like $10 for 25 hours. That would get the sales from people like myself who don't want a full commitment but want to play once in a while. If I find myself playing more then I could just buy the membership anyways.

I could get interested in Planetside or Star Wars Galaxies, but the monthly subscription puts me off.

The comparison has been used many times before, and I'll use it again.

The price of $15/mo (its around there) is about the same price you'll pay for a movie for 2 add drinks/food. Thats for 2 hours of entertainment. One hour with the Hollywood crap these days...

This game has literally countless hours of fun, as with all MMORPG's.

In a year of playing Asheron's Call 1, I paid $120 subscription (Ahh, the good old 9.99/mo days) for about 40 days of actual ingame entertainment. 40x20= 800 hours. Thats 15 cents an hour. Boo hoo...

P.S. I was an addict as you can tell with my obscene ingame time

It's a bargain compared to other forms of entertainment.

It's a new expense if you were gaming for free before.

Just in case it wasn't clear, SWG comes with one free month of play when you purchase the game. I'm only signed on for one additional month, and I may cancel even that before it comes around if I can get my addiction in check.

I have a jack of all trades character (creeping towards being a Carabineer) on Bria server, mostly Tatooine and Corellia, but planetary travel is cheap and I'm always happy to see new places.

Still on 512MB of RAM - definitely playable if other system specs are ok and you turn down a couple of the graphics options from the launchpad (texture quality and model detail if I recall no need to turn off any hardware acceleration).

I don't feel the price is unreasonable. If the devs can deliver interesting story arcs affected by player actions, and the Star Wars universe is your cup of tea, then the subscription costs are reasonable.

That said, I may ditch SWG when Blizzard releases the 1.10 (non-beta) patch for DII-LoD. The hours played per dollar spent on that game for me has been a ridiculously good bargain, unless you start factoring opportunity cost, but that's a whole different discussion.

[edit: misspelled "Carabineer"]

15 bucks a month to play online = worth it?
Laugh.

Every review I read said this game is so overhyped, and it sucks a$$

Definetly pass on it

I would hardy call it a bargain.
You pay £30-35 for the initial game, then £15-20 a month to actually play it.
I can also pay £30-35 for a game, and spend ages on the games SP and MP modes. Bridge Commander is a prime example for me. I got it over a year ago, yet, i am still playing it dayly, because of the vast amount of mods i have available to me.
So...12months decent play time for £30, or 12 months play time for £215? Hmm.....let me think what i would choose, well i must say this is a hard decision...

If the prices were lower monthly, say £5-10 at most, and the initial game around £20, then i might consider it. But until that time, i`ll stick to other cheaper games.

BoomAM, for you it's not for others it's a steal. It's all relative and I think that's the point many were making here.

I don't have PS but the reviews I've seen indicate it's above average. The persistent world and large scale battles seem to have attracted a strong following. But I do think much of the gameplay experience can be had in "pay once" games.

What sort of Bridge Commander mods are available? I rather liked that game though there was one mission that had me nearly pulling out my hair toward the end.

You name a mod, and its probably out.
There are hundreds of extra ships. Replacment ships for the stock ones (100x better texture quality), new weapons, new "arenas" to fight it, new damage textures, new sounds, new technologys.
Im a modder for BC myself.

I played it at a friends XP 2000 512mb of memory and had no problems at all. server was speedy and I was impressed with the graphics from the 9500np. I played EQ hardcore but I think MMPORG games are for single folks/kids that have some actual time to put into this. Wish there was 5 extra hours a day maybe 2 of which I'd play this game.

I'm actually experiencing slowdown when I first get around a large group of people and here is my system:

XP 3000+ 400MHz FSB
Asus A7N8X deluxe (rev 2.0)
2x256 PC3200 Corsair XMS RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro
Western Digital Raptor 36gb 10K RPM

...it's pissing me off. I play other games and they rock...

First off I'd like to mention that I absolutely LOVE RPGs, have probably spent more time playing them than I have doing anything else in my life, but with a lot of newer MMORPGS the price model is a bit screwed up. I would debate on playing this game if they gave you the client/game free.

$50 per client plus monthly, costs about 200 for a year? id rather spend that money fixing up my pc or buying new console

only was i can see paying for any of these rpgs is to pay sony the $22 all in one access, but u still have to buy all the games..

Everquest Was released in Mar 1999... So I figured I'd run some numbers. This of course you bought the games at MSRP on their release date and paid for service at the monthly rate. I know there are cheaper ways to play, I'm just illustrating a point. I wouldn't be an AT member if I didn't know what a hot deal is. Lets face it, once you are hooked on these games you are waiting to buy them at your local EB or whatever the day they are out.

Everquest $50
!1 months free service!
Ruins of Kunark $30
Scars of Velious $30
Shadows of Luclin $30
Planes of power $30
==============================
Clients/Games $170

$8.98 Monthly Fee
April 1999 - April 2002
37 months at $9 $333

$12.95 Monthly Fee
May 2002 - July 2003
15 Months at $13 $195
==============================
Running Total $698

Almost forgot... Coming soon
Legacy of ykesha $30

This doesn't even cover the cost of your spouse divorcing you over the game, legal troubles of when you cut the copper to your opponents houses, etc.

Oh and evercrack babies, if I didn't spell the names of your games right, I don't care... don't bother whining about it, but please do tell me if I used the wrong cost for something, I will update my info accordingly ...

Anyway, $700 for a game. In the long run I see your arguement, patches, maintenance, bandwidth, etc.
Diablo 2 took probably hundreds of hours of my time, but the thing is, I bought the game at $50 and the exp for $30. $80 investment, and still getting my money worth on it.

When it comes to terms of SWG I won't buy this game if I cant try it, and even then looking at what I posted above I probably wouldn't want to buy it.

Again, really hoping that blizzard uses a new price plan and sets WOW for like $5.99 or something. Id be in on that without even trying the game.

Ah Ha! So get rich quick schemes do work! How much is your tell all book and were can I get it or do you have one of those 4am infomercials on TV that I can tune into?

If you made that kind of RL loot from EQ I can only imagine how much money people are going to fetch when they start selling Jedi character slots?

I actually starting a money making system CD on ebay for $15 a pop at the end when Sony strongarmed Ebay to squash people who were making money from EQ. The funny thing was it was so easy and I didn't even have the Highest level character I couldn't I hung out in North Freeport too much trading.
